Ideas please !
Starting to get ready for winter when we get paid end of this month. Would like ideas for tins only - not rubbish but tins that will make a decent filling meal. Don't want to rely only on the freezer in case of too many powercuts.
Re: Ideas please !
Visit Ma Baxters outlet in Blackford. Good soups at low prices. Ask for a discount when you buy in volume.
Re: Ideas please !
Marks and Spencer do tins of chicken in a white sauce, brilliant for putting in a pie with leeks, mushrooms, etc. They also do tins of stewed beef, etc. I think that they are around £1.50-£2.00 each. They are good clobber for the price and are even cheaper if they are on offer.diamond lil wrote:Starting to get ready for winter when we get paid end of this month. Don't really need soup Ian, make my own and its terrific Thats a good idea itsy, never thought of M&S. Usually tins are hellish but theirs might be ok..
Re: Ideas please !
I can recommend M&S too. I've got their chicken in cream sauce, steak in gravy, lamb mince and minced beef. All good stuff, a bit more expensive than sainsbugs et al, but well worth it. They have tinned Red Salmon on offer at the mo. I think some of their tinned curry is too, I know you don't do 'foreign' though Lil Also, hard cod roe is good tinned. But not many folk like it(I do!) I don't do tinned veg, bleuggh horrible slimy soggy stuff,so can't make any recommendations there. Oh and then there's my favourite...... Fary Bentos tinned pies and Steak & Kidney pudding! Poundland have the pies for ...a Pound!
Re: Ideas please !
M&S also sell jars of onion gravy, and other yummy 'pour over' style sauces- they keep for yonks. I got some on an offer of 3 for £2.00 which is brilliant.
Re: Ideas please !
As regards cost. Yes, M&S are a bit more expensive, but you definitely pay for what you get when it comes to groceries, and their food is smashing. I just buy a couple of tins each time I go, which doesn't break the bank. It soon mounts up.

Noo nowt foreign! (Unless it's French, I do like French cooking). I like the sound of the sauces too...There's a M&S up near Ikea and Costco, will haul His Rattyness in there
Re: Ideas please !
Got to admit (like it's a secret) I get most of my tins @ Lidl. Cheap, not bad on quality (especially veggies) and you can throw some together for easy and cheap gravy dinners.
Re: Ideas please !
I usually get though 3 tins of mackerel a week, just discovered John West - Smoked Peppered Mackerel Fillets, few slices of bread with that’s a meal in itself.
I haven’t as much tinned stuff as I’d like but the majority of it is meat;
Corn beef
Mackerel
Sardines
Tuna
Chicken curry
