Kelly Kettle

Post by steptoe »

Hi folks ok i just got my Kelly and want to do a review for those still thinking about one , this will be done in stanges as this part is just the unbox.

Ok well first off the packaging i will say the box goes above and beyond and then to that they put it inside another box and before the do gooders say what abouyt the planet i say these boxes will be put on the compost so that is that covered , but i will say if you buy one the box it comes in you can use for other things to they are solid boxes .
Now to build quality the metal feels solid i mean not over weight but a nice weight , i went for the scout 1.2lt model for the wife and i but also it can re-boil fast to feed or help others in a party , we are looking at it for a brew and rehydrate noodles or soups , the metal feels so good and not over polished the seams from the point of a none metal worker who knows a little on metal these have been ground nice and clean , the kettle it's self is as i say a fair weight and until i test i will not know boil times .
The plates and cups that come with it again nice finish i will be washing them all then oiling them for lonbger life but being stainless if you look after them they should last a life time , the hobo pot stand can be put on the fire box once the kettle boils but you can put the pot stand on the top of the chimney to start it heating while the kettle boils again a plus for me because you can pop your beans or what ever in the pan it can be heating with the water and then the kettle boils you pop that off pop on the hobo stand and then pop the pan on there while you make the brew or a soup .
The set also comes with a grill to put on the fire box so you could bbq grill small bits of meat or a burger at a push but again until i test i think our main use will be the brew and soup and noodles, i know lots here have tried these type of kettle but i went kelly purely because it is a British company and well i do not want to start a debate i just want to buy British as and when i can .
Todays job is wash and clean it all then dry it in a low oven then rub in some oil to the cook pans and plates and season as the chefs call it i call it protecting it .

The wife has pointed out a couple of things it comes with everything but no cutlery and also she said i have to use some true oil on the wood handle to seal it and stop it from splitting over years of use with luck .

Ok well pictures paint a thousand words here are a couple lol yup there will be many more , i will say i have also ordered some heat proof gloves that will be put in the bag with the kit because as the wife said she tends to burn herself but i think i will be doing most of the pouring as her arthritus can make issues but that was why i went to the 1.2 lt not as heavy and the 1.6lt

Well we just cleaned and put boiling water through the kettle to wash and rinse it out a few times and we both came up with the same idea after you finished boiling water the kettle once cooled a little could be wrapped in a towel and pop in the sleeping bag to warm it lol oh us preppers will always try and find a multi use for anything lol .

Just a little tip i am sure someone else might already have thought of it but as we are new to the kettle it was just the kettle is so hot after being emptied my brain went ah-ha heat towel warm bed lol

Ok well we were hoping to do a boil and brew and may be a little cook up in the garden to test it but well snow stopped play so to speak and after thinking about it using it in the poly tunnel not just from the heat point but from the point of sparks is a no go so the review will have to wait .

I know loads of you guys have recipies for cook outs i am sure so any ideas would be great i was going for the basic soup , scrambled eggs and bacon grill lol yup the good old holy trinity

I have the Kelly kettle Trekker...basically the Billy no mates version of the scout with a 600ml capacity. The hobo stove is capable of producing pretty much any one pot meal that you can call to mind. The kettle itself will boil in under five minutes if you put a little extra effort into stripping off bark and splitting twigs to burn. Unfortunately with my version the cook set is a little small and impractical, both the cups won't nest for storage like they will with the larger Kelly Kettles and the plates are basically like cat food dishes.

Mines so old I don't think it's got a model name. I experimented with using a pan stand that slots into the top, worked very well but too wobbly to be relaxing so now I'm back to using it just for boiling water at which it is excellent.

Ok all thanks for the input , we are looking forward to a dry day that we can sit out for a few hours because i am hoping we can do a meal and a brew .

I will say some parts feel very well made the pan feels a little flimsy but again test and time will tell , i might do a can of the chicken cassorole with extra tine of new taters in the pot chopped small to cook better and then see , the wife is making a list of things to try but again right now just to cold for us to sit out even with the big garden chimnea going and the protection of the bbq area the wind whistles up fromthe canal .

I will do pictures and a full review but for now i guess i just keep dreaming of what to try on it lol

Again ,a criticism. And a month or so after the post. Please be more polite.

It's a review of a kelly kettle - what exactly don't you get? Perhaps if you could elaborate on what you don't understand someone can help you, but just stating 'I did not get what it is about ???' isn't helpful in the least.
