Well anything that's still alive out there is now buried in a sea of liquid mud. It has rained since 2pm yesterday, torrential, without a break. never seen such a wet year as this one. Thank god I live 1000ft up.

It looks bad for today, too. Weather forecasters were predicting up to 100mm of rain in some parts of North East Scotland!

It's August, FFS!

Hows the season looking so far then?

In a word, rubbish! I have 2 cucumbers and a bunch of green tomatoes. No chillis, peppers, spring onions are weedy and the lettuce has been munched!

Too wet and not enough sun! The only thing doing really well is the garlic!

Triple_sod, I am soooo jealous of your carrots - ours are terrible this year.

Have stripped my greenhouse cucumber plants bare and made 5 jars of cucumber pickle. Still got lots of life in my outdoor cucumber plants.

Went for a reccy walk and picked 2 &half pounds of blackberries. Made some blackberry and apple jam and will freeze some for pies and crumbles. But the bushes are still full of unripened berries so I will be going back.

However on the walk we came across what might be sloe or wild damson/plum. I've tried looking round the web but couldn't 100% identify them. OH is not keen to pick them unless we are sure what they are.

How can I find out?

Also, if they are sloe or damson does anyone have a good recipe for flavoured gin or vodka?
Thanks

There's an entire website devoted to sloe gin :)

The season is looking pretty good so far.

Other than a dodgey draw with Fulham last weekend, we are still second in the league to Man United with 4 wins and a plus 12 goal difference. Aguero is on fire, Silva is looking to be player of the season and even Dzeko has scored 6 goals in 4 games. With stars like Tevez and Balotelli on the bench the season is looking great so far.

Oh, er, um, I don't think you meant that kind of season did you?

Cucumbers are doing good also. :)

Be lucky (and sporty)

A friend of mine said that you need the frost to burst the sloes before you pick them?

A good first season - plenty of peas, beans, potatoes, onions, garlic, kale (yuk!), quinoa, courgettes - masses of 'em - cherry toms, and chillis.
Soya beans and carrots failed.
Got a new allotment in May. Now dug over and covered. Can't wait to get planting again!
