We've just come through the same thing as Jansman - realising that we need far less than we used to. And having less energy or strength to do what we used to. Found out some things -
Powdered mash is fantastic stuff. Tinned tatties are great in soup. Frozen veg is better and easier than fresh. Nido dried milk is fantastic and has a lot of uses. You can never have enough stock cubes!
And I def agree re plants in containers - far too much work, easier just sticking them in the ground.

My Jan does a lovely stew. Tinned spuds are perfect in it! :D

Thanks. Everything about this gardening game seems to be SO long term. I was hoping that with this size heap, that it would get busy this year and be somewhat useful next year :)

We don't eat squash, but I've seen suggestions to put my courgettes on it, maybe through a layer of cardboard.
People grow spuds in straw? and I've had spuds survive in my compost dalek. I might pop a couple of chitted seed spuds in and then start that next heap. I know mice/rats might be an issue.

What do the experts think about using bulk bags as composters?

So...... I have made the mistake of overwatering them
Told you not to water them.
Keep them JUST damp . They won’t take long to sprout. Simples. ;)
:( Yes. You sort of did. I misinterpreted. I thought that's what i was doing, but when I dug out the rotted ones I was surprised how very wet they were. I'd literally only sprinkled water on from my wet hand. Guess i just did it too often.
Oh hum. I HOPE that the sprouted ones survive if I stop watering them now. It's always famine or feast for my babies. :(

You underestimate my ability to screw up. Either that or you think those triffids are immortal.

A Quick family photo.... Not bad for a 18 days since sowing. Notice how small the ones in the card tubes are compared to their sisters.

My Jan does a lovely stew. Tinned spuds are perfect in it! :D
Powdered mash - Idahoan. I've tried almost every iteration of powdered mash and that is by far the most superior!

Tinned potatoes are also great fried up.

We have a lovely recipe for Balti style Bombay potatoes that uses tinned spuds.
Jenny: I have pretty much given up on using paper or cardboard tubes. Nothing seems to do well in them for me.

Thx. So it's not just me. The card seems to evaporate off any moisture at unpredictable rates. In the blink of an eye they're bone dry and dead. Other times, they can stay wet long after the plastic ones. I've not had much luck with them like that. Hydroponic fairs better. kratky hydroponic
