There is a school of thought that it's better to use non-military looking stuff in a bugout or shtf situation, so you don't look like a prepper. Personally for my bugout bag I use a 55 litre Kelty Redwing, a model from about 2018. It has a big U zip for easy access which you can just open a bit for top access, two good sized side pockets with gaps behind so you can slide trekking poles down, with little mesh pockets below, which can hold the bottom of the poles, various internal pockets (but not so as to eat up space), metal frame, yet the whole thing weighs just 1.5 kg which is very light for the price and all the features. It doesn't feel flimsy and it has a proper padded hip belt. It also has a few attachment points for strapping things to the outside. Of course for a GHB, 55 l might be a bit big. The side pocket zips go right down one side, so it's easy to find things.DustyDog wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 10:54 am Yay, finally convinced my SO to start buying bulk dried and tinned food, only taken a few years. . Starting on my GHB, now, any recommendations for an army style or ex military rucksacks? The one I have isn’t really big enough for a decent ghb, for everything I think I need.

The pita in the picture also sussed out that she could get up the back of the bathroom vanity unit (it's on little 6" legs) the pipework cavity up the back is a climbing frame to the draw full of pouches ..
The black and white moggie hasn't sussed how to open the pouches.. Tilly on the other hand thinks she's bear Grylls and will feed herself even if the human tin openers are nowhere to be found...
Also treated myself to 4 new pairs of merino wool socks

Today,I am sweeping the big chimney. It’ll be the last time ,because of my health situation, but I have a sweep who knows the set up,and he’ll deal with it next time, which is good. Then it’ll be a lazy afternoon watching classic British comedy on tv. And the chimney will be operational!

I did a check of my prescription meds box. Got a bit of a shock at how low I am on some stuff, so I have an order in now. and reminders for the future set up.

Pleased to say that the outside maintenance, rubbish removal and general garden/ yard tidiness is now completed. My wife is pleased with it all,so that’s good. All paperwork is updated and simplified, and income etc all sorted for my dear lady for when I pass on. I am hoping that my illness can be kept at bay beyond the 12 to 18 months the specialist suggested, obviously. Of course,it could be sooner, which is why all the work has been prioritised. There’s no set moment, so that was the reason for getting sorted quickly.
My final preparation towards that situation is upon the request of my wife, bless her. I am organising my own funeral. I am currently writing a final speech, sorting music and paying our local undertaker ( I prefer the old fashioned terminology ); He’s a chap I was at school with ,drank and fished with. That’ll do me! That will all be concluded by Thursday. It means I can put all my thoughts and energy into my Radiology and chemotherapy when it starts next week. The Battle Commences.
I can truly say that that is the ultimate prepping!

It really is, isn't it Your stoicism is astounding, jansman, I think you and your wife are amazing. Since you've got the meeting with the undertaker (!!!) on Thursday, and your radiology and chemotherapy start next week, can I *please* ask you to have some time together with your wife, going to a favourite panorama and taking your favourite pie with a nice brew, something like that? Or a full family get together with different people bringing different food, so it doesn't all fall to you and your wife to provide? It will set you up!
And, erm, today is Valentine's Day - I don't know if you're allowed alcohol or not, but if you're not, get someone to go to the shops and get something fizzy - water, tonic water, lemonade, whatever, and have a toast with one another! These things are preps too.
