Hello!

Post by preppermike »

Hi all,

I've been lurking on these forums for a while now, I thought it was time to start making some contributions.

I'm Mike, based in the East Midlands and I guess I've been a passive prepper for around 10 years. I'd never really considered keeping a few spares and a bit of food / water stocked up as being a prepper.

It's only in the last few years that I've started taking it seriously.

I'm prepping for the most likely scenarios in my opinion:
- Loss of income
- Food / Water scarcity
- Power cuts
- Medical emergencies

And somewhere way down at the bottom of the list, I'm preparing for the government no longer existing / fending for your self.

I'm a keen gardener, I love the outdoors and I'd love to own a small holding / bit of land in the next 5 years!

Thanks for having me!

Hi, welcome. I believe pandemic is the most likely disaster nationally. At least that's the opinion of the government, and Cheshire Resilience, who the govt link to. CR do a chart of likelihood vs seriousness, it's worth looking up. In fact here it is https://cheshireresilience.org.uk/docs/crfrisk.pdf

But yeah, lots of us prep for a drop in income, food, water, power and medical.

Peronally I prep for possible evacuation from my house, or even the locality. This is hotly debated here.

Also I fear as you do, government not existing. Also I do worry about us getting some kind of terrible dictatorship.

And climate change/biodiversity loss/resources used up. The climate crisis is here, it will kill a lot of people and cause suffering to many. It's going to get a lot worse.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yea, I phrased it wrong.

I meant these are the things I'm prepping for that could happen to me personally.

Totally agree re: Pandemic being most likely nationally.

Mike.

Yes, of course, everyone has their own circumstances. I've added a link to the post above, by the way. Also, I wonder if the economic risk has gone up nationally the last couple of years? They don't seem to include it, not in the chart.

I certainly think it has.

I think we'll see some worrying stuff at the tail end of this year economy / food etc.

Welcome to the forum, preppermike, that's good that you're taking it up a notch. I'm sure there are a lot of people like you were, quite a few people still "keep a good pantry", prepping just adds to that by going on to a few other levels - loss of employment, flooding, that sort of thing. You will see jokes about zombies, just warning you

You mean it's not real?
Speaking of which, who's watching Last Of Us? It's rather excellent, episode 6 should be out today or tomorrow.

Inflation is obviously a cornern. Some of us are on company pensions that don't go up with inflation, or even don't go up at all. Others will be hit by the interest rates or rising rents. Some by the borderline recession, which might hit certain industries more than others. The UK has had 43 years of neoliberalism. At least we still have the NHS, just about, for now.

Hi and welcome. Have you considered getting an allotment. I just got mine after 6m wait. Only £25 a year.

I look forward to your contributions
