Your coal and wood use this Winter,compared to last year

And before anyone says anything,I’m not taking the p*** ,running alongside the gas and electric version

Also ,I KNOW not everyone uses solid fuels,but many Preppers do,even if it’s just for back up. Saying that - we don’t use gas. Non of the popular gas central heating here… Solid fuel is our primary source of heat.Is it for anyone else?

So ,kicking off: We are using a little more smokeless coal right now,as neither of us are going to work! Wood we get for zero,although in the future ( a good while I am hoping ) wood will have to be purchased,as I won’t be here anymore. So unfortunately,I cannot put a price on the usage of that,but it’s a fair amount I do know.Mind you,just locally,and I suspect nationally,it’s as common as rocking horse sh*t! Coal we use 30 kg per week on average. Fortunately,up until last week we were on stored coal,which was half the price it is now. It was obvious last February that fuel was going to increase in price,along with the rest of it.

So going on the 9 months that the stoves burn in Winter into Spring this years cost will be 6 months at £300 ,3 months at £300! It’s doubled. But that’s no different to gas ,electric,petrol and diesel is it? Mind you,as said previously , the solid fuel is our *primary* heating via two multifuel stoves.

I burn scrap woodchip have done for years.
Free apart from diesel to get their and back and time smashing it up.
This year I burnt more it was and still is a cold winter.
My costs have gone up ie diesel price but I always go shopping on the same trip 10 miles each way.

My biggest concern is new regulations on what you can burn ,not here yet but just a matter of time.

I use chip wood if it comes my way. Burns like coal! You can bet that rules will change,for sure.

Just had a load of 2 x 4 timber dropped off from a friend who was threatened with divorce unless he cleared the garage
It will be chopped into blocks and used .. bloke over road chopped his entire fencing up 2 weeks ago and left it all in my garden
I have a load of tree wood also to cut when dry ..
The bags of wood have shot up in price now if you can get them ..they were 3.99 now 6 .49 and a friend of mine is paying 120 quid for a tonne
Mr GG used to always cut all the wood and he hides popping up and down by the window watching me through fingers over his eyes ...while I'm waving the chainsaw around and various sharp electric things that I have been learning to use..
I'm still in one piece ..and the fire is on
Free wood for now till they price us all out and bring whatever laws in ...

To be honest I really don't rea!ly know if I'm honest. We seem to have used a bit of wood and the log stores seem to have been run down a little more but saying that my wood tends to come from work either tree prunings/fellings or joinery offcuts and that supply can be erratic. I don't burn treated or painted wood , if I did then I'd have more but I prefer not to.

Last November we changed our old multi-fuel stove for a new more efficient and supposedly eco friendly one, we are now burning just over HALF the old one did and it gives out enough heat to cut out the central heating.

A 25 bag of smokeless coal now costs £18.50 (two years ago it was £12) a tonne is £700, We have always tried to keep a tonne or so in stock to last a long winter but we will burn any (free) wood we come across.

We have used a lot more wood but much less oil. Some free wood and some bought. I prefer the heat from the wood burners to the oil heating, cost wise it is swings and roundabouts really although we can keep the log burners on for much longer than we could afford to use the oil.
