What lessons from the riots so far ?

Post by Carrot Cruncher »

Viewing some of the footage on the tv there are a few things, from my point of view some of the most important were...

Fire Extinguishers....how many of us preppers haven't got one ? quite a few I expect ( I only have one in the campervan), and if you do have one (preferably more) when was the last time it was checked etc, do you know how to use them, do you know which type to use for different types of fire ?

Escape Ladder (rope etc) We may not be as lucky as the woman in the photo who had some policemen waiting to catch her when she jumped from the burning flat

A Bag with enough kit in it to allow you to bug out at short notice, including all your documents and phone numbers (no doubt you will get a numpty on the phone when you try and contact your insurance company....knowing your policy number etc will make things easier). A BOB is not just for bugging out into the woods.

And without getting into the legalities (or illegalities).....the means to protect yourself and your family. If these riots have proved anything they have proved that (at least initially) you will have to look out for yourself in the event of widespread disorder.

What else ?

Main and back routes out of your town/city.
You have to know the streets inside out. Get up to date A-Z's of your area, and other maps, plot routes out - in car, on foot etc.

Make sure your mobils phone has credit, have a spare phone (you may will have in your BOB's)

Photo ID - carry it on you just in case you get stopped.

Keeping up to date with local intel via whatever means you have available, and passing on relevant info here and to others.

Keeping in regular contact with loved ones to ensure they are fully appraised of the situation, and when to get out of dodge.

A GHB is vital. I need to re-evaluate mine, and the actual bag itself as walking any distance with it loaded up is not comfortable! ( had a longer walk this morning, and my bag had twisted my back!)

It's better to be safe than sorry, and get out of the situation before it erupts.

Situational awareness. Keep your guard up; if you are in an area where crowds are gathering.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

All of the above.I was in a fire some yrs ago.Extinguishers/fire blankets.Even had two BIG escape windows ,front and back at a cost of 1400 quid.I am 'capable' of self defence !All my documents are on a portable fire safe.

To the fire extinguisher I would add a fire blanket or two- maybe a yard square one for the kitchen; but the bigger man sized ones as well- they are excellent to cover small spot fires, also as protection against radiant heat if going past a fire to escape.
Plus, being fairly robust, they can go over a window sill to help protect against glass shards as you get out.
I actually have 3 small extinguishers, 1 each in kitchen, garage and car. A blast of powder in the face would be quiet unnerving to an attacker......

I have three small and one large powder and two large water extinguishers.
Fire blankets are useful I have two.
Will be moving a small powder extinguisher to the hall as it may be useful there to repel intruders. ;)
