Lawn mowing... warning ⚠️

Good! I hate gardening, cant think of any household chore Id rather do less I do think replacing your lawn with artificial grass needs to be banned though, it always looks absolutely awful.

SO. I will refrain from mowing my traditional hay meadow! WTH has that got to do with lawns?

To be fair, those who mow the goodness off of their lawns, lob the good stuff in the brown bin, then try to replace it with feed&weed then do it all again, are being a bit daft and wasteful. Plus all those hours wasted nurturing a lawn. So I generally agree to mow less. I have my area for wildflowers and pollinators, but there's a place for everything except dandelions in my front lawn. Nuts to that dopey idea.

If I had my way, both front and back lawns would be sowed with veg, which would go down like a lead balloon on the suburban open plan estate. (Would that be legal? I wonder?)

Many years ago on the estate I lived upon as a lad,a complainer told the council about his elderly neighbour who had an ‘untidy ‘ front garden. Lawn with flower borders. Mr Mee was a world war 1 veteran who was elderly and ill. He dug the garden and planted spuds in neat rows! Then asked the council to deal with the scrap cars on the front of the neighbours house! Nothing more happened.

Two things.
1. I complained to the council about a hedge in my old road that the owners had allowed to grow so far over the six foot pavement there was only about a foot to get past. A few weeks later it was cut right back.

2. A house in the next road over from us had gardens so overgrown that the council issued an enforcement notice and, when not complied with, sent contractors in to clear it.

Same with my cul de sac. Council haven’t been near it in years and refuse to cut it back, it’s left to us to do it. There’s a few neighbours that have a lead right foot when coming round the corner, taxis, delivery men etc, it’s just a matter of time before a kid gets run over but as I said, Edinburgh Council have basically shrugged and said ‘not our problem’ as it is meant to be the factor that went bust 15 years ago that does it. It’s technically ‘no man’s land’ so they don’t give the proverbial keich.

It will take an accident for something to get done.

That’s the point though; lawns can look nice,but they are a waste of life - Mine!

Me too! My grass (not a lawn ) has far too many tufts of grass, as opposed to something you can walk on when you're looking at it, but on the other hand its also a miracle of biodiversity - there are dandelions, daisies, strawberries, sorrel, winter savory, all sorts of things migrate there, the bees love it and so do I.

My grass (not a lawn ) has far too many tufts of grass, as opposed to something you can walk on when you're looking at it, but on the other hand its also a miracle of biodiversity - there are dandelions, daisies, strawberries, sorrel, winter savory, all sorts of things migrate there, the bees love it and so do I.

You are doing the Eco- correct thing it appears!

I wonder if they'd consider paying gardeners a sort of set aside payment. A payout so we still have income but the grass stays long. I think I know the answer to that one. For that matter does the no mow thing apply to football pitches , bowling greens and tennis courts? Same answer probably...
There are some lawns I mow every week , most are fortnightly and some once every three weeks. It's not hard to see that the most frequently mown lawns have less weed and are a more uniform grass green affair. I do have one customer who I go to fortnightly and she has told me her late husband would mow the lawn almost every day. He'd get home from work and while she was making dinner he'd get the mower out.
