We concentrate so much on wheat and veg shortages that we ignore this at our peril. If/when rice dependent nations get hungry, then international unrest is sure to follow.
Oh hum. As a prepper, I'll be stocking up before the price redoubles.
Best deals on long grain rice, anyone? My target price <50p/kilo.

Unfortunately I only see problems for the 3rd world ,when rice becomes harder to buy the price will rise and those poor souls who live on a $ or $$ a day will be pushed out of the market.

Pakistan and China were hit by heat and floods - the climate crisis.
In Pakistan the floods wiped out 10% of their rice, and capitalism does what it does, so food prices in Pakistan went up.
Also Pakistan seems to be on the verge of a military dictatorship once more, although Imran Khan was released by a judge.

As climate change takes a good foothold, any country that becomes able to produce staple foods that were not able to before will battle with countries that are now less able to do so. Expect rice, wheat, tea and coffee to come from some pretty unusual places.

Now there is one;tea. For us that is serious!Mad Scientist wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 10:23 pm As climate change takes a good foothold, any country that becomes able to produce staple foods that were not able to before will battle with countries that are now less able to do so. Sadly I won’t be here to experience such a shock ( and I suspect nobody else here too) to the social system, but I am guessing that we will have to go back to our original staple. Potatoes.
I can remember when we first moved here and our neighbour had been there since 1938. When her husband went to war,the rationing and Dig For Victory campaign came in. When I set 150’ of garden with spuds just to tidy it up ,Muriel told me all about how all the gardens concentrated upon such crops. I think it’s what we may have to drift back to,although gardens and even allotments are rare now in both space and availability.

Interesting times ahead for us encouraging the population to grow and eat potatoes when for the last few years we have been told that potatoes are a carbohydrate that turns into sugar almost streght away after eating.

My Oncologist told me to avoid too much rice, pasta AND spuds. As she said ,we all eat too much and do too little as it is. She’s right.

Omigod, a potential problem with the supply of tea? No! Enough is enough!
