What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

Well if you can go six days without a shave I sure don’t know how! 24 hours irritates me. Yes , I could , and I am expected to shave electrically. My drugs make my blood thinner. However, I still prefer water and a razor. In fact I have used a ‘cut throat’ for many years. Proper!

Regarding showers/ bathing though: I am sure that it won’t kill you if you don’t. However, stinking like a dirty pig ain’t my way. I do a lot of outdoor work, fishing etc. It makes one mucky.

I can assure you I don't stink. Pigs are clean animals apparently, although I haven't sniffed one. I used to shower every day when I was a tradesperson, but I don't need to stick to that these days. Sometimes I leave it a day or two. I would know if I started to smell. I will usually have a wash if I don't have a shower. I always have a shower after a bike ride.

I’ve farmed and slaughtered pigs,and they don’t wear Brut aftershave As for washing,I can do that with minimal water,and just because of emergency there’s no reason not to wash regularly. But it’s horses for courses. We have a neighbour two doors down. Nice bloke,I was at school with him. but he smells like the local tip. He’s single.
All that aside though. Back in 1990 we were five days without water. I simply fetched it from the brook over the road and strained and boiled it. Then washed. If I stank I couldn’t go to work in the food industry!

Couple of articles on sweat and BO. Not all sweat causes BO, and there are many causes of BO including diet and medical conditions.

For anyone reading this who is interested, I posted four links to articles by doctors about how often you need to shower, about half a dozen posts back. First link was Havaard Medical School. The gist of these articles was that a daily full body wash with soap is probably not necessary, and may even be bad for you. Having read the two articles linked in this post, about BO, I would assume that some people need to wash certain areas more often. Basically, if you smell, wash. Of course if you can't smell your own BO you don't know. But also that there may be other causes, as I mentioned.

Ooooh noooo! Tell ya what. I’ll shave and shower/ wash - even if there’s an emergency. I’ll be smart and hygienic.

You carry on and not bother washing - or shaving for 6 days as you told us you don’t,and keep smelling and looking like a badgers ar*e! And badgers are like pigs; they don’t wear Brut either!

Got a week's annual leave and kids are off school/college so we've got a good little system going to cut,process & clear the farmers fallen trees. One field cleared, one to go. Reaching that lovely situation where we may run out of space to store wood . I'm thinking we're definitely at the two winters mark

Nice can you heat water on the fire to get a wash




On the washing front I can stand a couple of days after that I feel grotty bowl of hot water a bar of soap and a cloth soon makes you feel fresh again I've got a pump up hozelock shower I can have a good clean with about 5l of water including what little hair I have left

Yes, can heat water on the woodburner but also on the (bottled) gas hob so no worries for boiling water. 3x spare gas bottles = 2 years worth of gas. Although that time span would be reduced if we were using the hob more for sterilising water.

Regarding heat of water and soap. United States CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) says for washing hands
1. Use ordinary soap
2. It makes no difference if the water is hot or cold.

Obviously hot water is nice, but it is not necessay.

Speaking of hot water. The digital timer has wrapped it on the immersion heater. Got the plumber coming out to replace that and the element . Fortunately,our shower is self heating ,so the hot water tank is for bath and kitchen sink. So none for washing up ,and washing food plates and cookery dishes and pans is MOST important hygiene - wise. The kettle does the job . However,in the morning as I make tea, each kettle is full to the top. So I get my cuppa and the rest goes into a 1.5 litre steel vacuum flask. I have three of these. They stay hot for 24 hours too. Takes the hassle out of a broken hot water system.

Speaking of hot water. The digital timer has wrapped it on the immersion heater. Got the plumber coming out to replace that and the element . Fortunately,our shower is self heating ,so the hot water tank is for bath and kitchen sink. So none for washing up ,and washing food plates and cookery dishes and pans is MOST important hygiene - wise. The kettle does the job . However,in the morning as I make tea, each kettle is full to the top. So I get my cuppa and the rest goes into a 1.5 litre steel vacuum flask. I have three of these. They stay hot for 24 hours too. Takes the hassle out of a broken hot water system.

There's always something isn't there hope the element comes out ok... My parents still have the old back boiler with electric immersion set up one morning we woke up to a hellishly loud bang dad thought something had hit the house... Transpired that the element had failed and due to no RCD the element had split and was tracking to earth (the copper tank) boiling the water in its path... To the point the pressure built up to the point it blew up the expansion pipe into the header tank... As the plumber explained it takes a heck of a lot of pressure to lift a 8' head of water up a 22mm copper pipe ..

Least the timer is a simple fix and shtf you could bridge it easy enough or replace temporary with a mains switch

If I am honest, I’d do it myself, but I cannot be bothered. I’ll go fishing instead!
