Recommend me some books!

Post by Quagmire »

Okay, I already have the mini SAS Survival guide, which has some quite interesting info in it, but kinda assumes you are in the deep wilderness.

I've had a quick scan on Amazon, and found these (American) books, anyone recommend these at all:

There are also a lot of 'zombie survival' books, do people really take that seriously! lol

Thanks.

Hi Quagmire
Ive read all of those titles you found and would have to say it depends what you are after.
98.6 degrees is really a book about the psychology of survival and basics of staying alive out in the wilds unexpectedly. It discusses topics such as good trail sense.

The collins book is a good basic be prepared book, good as an intro to the subject I thought.

The Rawles book is a true book for preppers I thought but heavily centred around the US and goes into some details about guns. If you read Rawles survival blog you will know this is a common discussion point and it zig zags between survivalists and preppers. It really sets out everything for a serious set up started way before any SHTF scenario and kind of reflects everything you read within his novel Patriots.

When all Hell Breaks Loose is also very good but I thought again focused on afterwards not so much on preparing, but as always has some little gems as Cody Lundin really knows his stuff.
Just my two pence worth.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

There is really not a massive amount targeted towards the UK, two books I'd recommend is Collins Gem - Food For Free and The Essential Guide to Back Garden Self-sufficiency: Feed Your Family from a Quarter of an Acre or Less.

Survival means a lot of different things to different people, so it really depends what you’re looking for in a book.

That one by Cody Lundin is based around the premise that you’ve gone out into the wilderness, got in trouble and need to sustain yourself until rescue arrives. Now in that respect it’s an excellent book, and I’d highly recommend it, but if its not what your after.......

As for 'zombie survival' books, I might be wrong, but I reckon it’s a bit of a euphemism for the masses. It’s a lot easier to write about shooting your way though un-dead hordes, that desperate hungry people.

The zombie survival guide is a very funny book, its worth reading. World War Z his second book is being made into a film and is also a good read.

Again, very biased towards the american market but is good for basic prepping needs, possibly even one to have on the bookshelf to lend to someone just starting to prep.

Enjoyed this one (not to everyone tastes) but has given me lots of ideas for simple projects I can do around the house and in the garden, helping us become more self sufficient.

Good for getting the basics for herbal medicines although I would suggest undertaking a short course on herbal remedies to compliment this.

Emergency by Neil Strauss is a very good read. It's not an instruction manual but details his life for a couple of years as he goes from no prepping skills whatsoever to a fairly well rounded prepper/survivalist. As i said its not an instruction manual but it does have some useful little tricks in it.

He gets a bad press amongst some Survivalists/Preppers as he is a journalist and has previously written books about pop/rock bands etc but I found it a really good read. It is US based but it is more about the mindset and the various thought processes he goes through in Prepping than a list of things to do in a crisis so is still relevant.

Either of the books by Cody Lundin are good Why?Because they deal with core body temperature.Proper hydration, thermal regulation etc. Without an understanding of this you ARE dead. Also he does not recommend loads of expensive "survival" junk.Just common sense kit.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Read "The Biggest Secret" or "The Lion Sleeps No More", both by David Icke.

Won't tell you how to prepare but they will certainly give you a reason to start. Worth knowing what is really happening in the world.

Before anyone jumps on the David Icke Hate Bus, try reading something of his first. Just skip the Reptillian stuff and everything else else is a plain as the nose on your face. (Assuming you have a nose).

If you'd like something a bit different, I'm reading How Late The Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wihelm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Late ... Birds_Sang) at the moment. It's an SF novel with a pretty dark take on survival after TSHTF... I'll come and post some more once I've finished it. Reading it at the moment is making me want to run for them hills...
