Gas canisters

There are stoves that sit on top of those tall thin canisters?! Doesn't sound very stable! Mine sits on a backpacking type, but I have a stabaliser. Remote are better really.

Seen a few in the past which are not as robust one reviewer has a cheap china compact version get very "lively " to put it bluntly

Well that's the sort of thing I imagined. But it doesn't sit on top of the canister, does it? Is the canister on its side, inside? That could work!
I'm used to ones that look like this...

Yup, those are the ones, I wasn't clear, apologies, I was referencing the fact that (I vaguely recall) propane has a lower boiling point so during use the propane boils off first, then the cannister is running mostly on butane, which could be an issue in cold (below sub 0C) temperatures. Remote stoves are indeed superior for stability, a stove that uses a preheat tube allows the cannister to be used inverted, which prevents this propane boil off "issue".

I got the Soto Windmaster for my EGB. Reason, saves a lot of weight. To get fully self supported including tent and winter clothes down to 12 kg you have to watch every gram. Obviously backpackers don't carry things like a Leatherman and a Mora. Windmaster with 4 flex is 86g plus 25g plastic stabaliser. Lightest remote is 160g. Windmasters are supposed to be good in wind and ok in winter. Lightest Soto remote is 182g. The other reason I got it is it fits with a small canister inside a 1.1 litre pot with lid on. When I used to do climbing and backpacking I used a remote. It was also half the price of a remote when I got it.

The Coleman 500 gas canisters are a good price too, I've ordered them before.

Actually, at £21.50 for 6 cartridges, that's a great deal. Comparing the gas, its better value than the isobutane ones as the propane/butane mix works down to lower temperatures*. Pretty sure I bought mine for £30 and thought the value was okay.

*I'm aware of the "sit on top" gas stoves using up all the propane first then you just have 70% butane that won't work in very cold conditions.
