Nuclear War

Post by mcprepper »

I’ve just read ‘Nuclear War’ by Annie Jacobsen - shortlisted for the 2024 Baillie Gifford prize (available in Kindle too). It was both brilliant and terrifying in equal measures. A thoroughly well-researched non-fiction thriller. I read it in one sitting then passed it to Mr mcprepper who isn’t much of a reader but was totally engrossed (loves war ‘strategy’ stuff). It gives a totally realistic and compelling up-to-date account of what could happen … Not for the faint-hearted.

I have the audiobook version. While it is indeed a book that expertly deals with the topic, I felt it always went to the ‘worst case scenario’ at every turn which is fine for the book, it wouldn’t sell if it was ‘a cooler head decided not to launch missiles over Russia’.

Even though it’s not been used that much especially after the invasion of the Ukraine, there’s a reason why the hot line between the major nuclear powers exists. It’s to prevent the major powers stumbling into Armageddon.

Yes, you are right, it was a ‘worst case scenario’ book - probably should have mentioned that! I guess it just appealed to my pessimistic nature and made me question exactly what I’m actually prepping for …

You can’t prep for it. Too small an island, too many targets and would you really want to survive it? It’s been talked about before on here and the universal pov is to crack open the decent whisky and watch the missile come in as there’s not much you can do.

Well if Ivan drops one here, it'll be because they've run out of anywhere interesting, significant or militarily valuable.

I'm an hour out of aberdeen. I'd probably have time to finish most of a bottle then I wouldn't know if it was the alcohol or radiation sickness doing me in 😉

The Annie Jacobsen book is on offer on kindle, 99p right now! I don't care how unavoidable, I'm going to get the book at that price. Thanks for the heads up, mcprepper.

As to survivability - I appreciate a book that goes for the worst possible at every turn. But I also recognise that that's very, very unlikely. Something that actually happens might well be survivable, and I want me and my family to have the best chance of that (I mean, I don't even know if the book deals with that, but for 99p I'm okay with that :) ).
