Being aware of which groups might not feel happy about you is key. As a white female I felt really quite uncomfortable walking around Tooting on a Friday afternoon being stared at by men in their morace.sque Friday best. Also not a good place to be visibly gay of any race.
General crime is a matter of staying awake and not on the phone. "Have you got the time" is now an invitation to find out whether your phone is worth nicking. The look on one pair's face when I just checked my very cheap wristwatch before I learned about this trick was telling.

Thank you! I should emphasize that it's self published, I haven't been taken up by a publisher, but I was very lucky in finding a good volunteer proof reader. I've got a folder of new bookmarks in my browser, and one fine day there *will* be an update.

GillyBee's points, in the post above this one, are worth making too: it's not just race, it's sexual orientation, and in a few areas of the country (like Liverpool when I was growing up) it's also Orange and Green.

The thing about asking the time and using a cheap watch to answer the question instead of an expensive mobile, is priceless, and I've seen little vids on YT of people talking about that, I think.
