I have just turned over the last 40 litres of stabilised May 2005 petrol. Absolutely no problems with the old petrol. I use Wynn's fuel stabilizer (with a Z) part number 47355. It costs £10.20 for enough to stabilise 50 litres of petrol or Diesel. So, just over 20p/litre of fuel to store it for at least 6 years. I use 20 litre metal jerry-cans. I find the plastic sort stink up the garage.
The stabiliser is easily available in the UK from most car and motorbike accessory shops (including Halfords). Anywhere that sells Wynn's products (I get mine from Camberley Autofactors) but you might have to order it as many don't keep it on the shelf.
The storage of petroleum spirits is a moot point, being limited legally, in a vehicle, domestic garage or near (<6 metres) residential premises, to 4 gallons in two 2 gallon metal containers plus 10 litres in two 5 litre plastic containers. So my 20 litre jerry cans are a no, no at home.

Re: Old Petrol
Thats interesting to hear it lasted 6 years. I use Sta-Bil in and although it says 12 months at a certain dosage and 24 months at double the dosage I was going to leave 5L for longer and see how it performed. Does the Wynn's have a recommended time on it ?

Re: Old Petrol
They just say 'A long time'. I believe that the metal can also helps in that all the light fractions are kept in instead of migrating through the plastic and stinking the place up.
