What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12

Ah no staying put isn't a viable option, although where we are now was fine when we bought it more than 20 years ago but as the years roll by niether health nor lifestyle is what it was. The gardens too small to allow a decent size extension, then add into that that we absoluely hate it where we are now (Sheffield), just wish we had known then what we do now. The good side of all the problems we have is that the wife is now much more onboard with a prepping lifestyle lol.

Ah! End of! You have to move, you really do. I'm glad you've got a good chance of having similar aims in the new property, if she's now on board with prepping (more or less, anyway ).

I remember going to Sheffield a million years ago to look at a Manpower Services Commission scheme based at a stables, and it was staggering how soon we were out in the countryside, very wild - it was gorgeous, though I expect the suburbs have grown a lot since then, it was a *long* time ago.

I used to climb at Stanage, and that's only a couple of miles from the outskirts of Sheffield. It's completely wild there.

I'm due to retire in a couple of years ( if things work out). As such, can't put it off any longer - have started on The Plan.. What i need to do on the run up to retirement and, more importantly, what the hell I'm going to do with myself once I do retire.

Have a reasonable idea on the run up to retirement. Post retirement? Currently staring at a very blank sheet of paper....

It's definitely worth having a plan. On my run up to retirement, I considered first the house I was living in, and things such as how many stairs or steps it has/had. In other words I considered the ergonomics for my house and what it might be like to live in when I became a lot older. If you don't already do DIY, now is a good time to consider it and get your home easy to live in if necessary. The main thing about DIY is to know one's limitations as well as skills. Doing this will provide motivation and ease the transition from work to retirement.

I ended up in a bungalow with a level - ish garden. This was a mess and needed sorting out; the plan was for low maintenance.

Finance is another area to consider. Now is a good time to begin getting it straightened out if necessary.

The lifestyle change may affect how you prep.

This is easy for me to say, but: Plan before retirement, complete plan and execute post retirement

Have started the process of sorting and packing our preps, in preparation of a possible move this year.
Also added 2 silver Britannia’s to my collection. Am going to make that a regular monthly purchase from now on.

Bought some more candles and lamp oil in case of power cuts (none so far but it’s Shetland so they are coming). Also bought a carbon monoxide alarm. It’s a portable one, so in case of power cut if we hunker down in one room and burn more peat, and light candles and oil lamps we can rest a little easier.

It’s a portable one, so in case of power cut if we hunker down in one room and burn more peat, and light candles and oil lamps we can rest a little easier.

All good preps with the co alarms make sure it's got the bsi kitemark on it lots of crap from China that doesn't work as you'd expect......

Mount it / place it as per the instructions . I had an argument with a gas man a few years ago that failed us as the co alarm 'is in the wrong place ' "now Mr gas man Gas safe might say that however I'm sure they also say that the manufacturers instructions take precedent... and here are the instructions....

That's the European approval number twinned with bsi but the bs institution will go after anyone using the kitemark like a rabid dog who haven't passed
their requirements / inspections/ met their standards...

The -1 is for home use the -2 is a more robust sensor relating to "mobile use" Be it caravan/ boat etc more resilience to damp / vibration/ temperature fluctuating

Strangely for domestic use they say one alarm In Each room with a fuel burning appliance so must newer homes with just a combi boiler only need one yet a static caravan needs 2 alarms regardless as you can't see it smell it etc..

I've one in each room as in kitchen (boiler) lounge (fireplace)

Each bedroom 2 of them have a chimney stack in .. and if next door have issues been mid terrace the stuff can get in via joist holes etc

In our normal daily routine, I’m not too worried about carbon monoxide buildup. Our oil boiler is in a seperate part of the house, and where our fire is it’s quite an open area with living room, dining room and kitchen all open plan. Plenty of air moving around.
This will be used in case we have to close ourselves into a smaller space.
Having said that however, I think I will get 2 BS ones. Kitchen and near boiler. This one will be used as an extra if we have a power cut and start burning more lamp oil n candles.

Slaughtered one of our goats and she is now hanging in the fridge in our cold cellar ready to be exchanged for two lambs tomorrow. These will be raised for the canning and freezing later in the year. Also purchased more winter bee food slabs which will be put in our hives tomorrow to hopefully see the colonies through till spring. Fingers crossed.

Realised that the outside walls in the prep room are probably cold enough to get condensation, and I have a rack of clothes touching it. Can't see any mould, thankfully, on the walls or the clothes. I moved the rack away from the wall a bit, so at least they aren't touching. It's a cold room, and the radiator is on fairly low. I'll open the door during the day to let air circulate.

I read today that bic lighters can deteriorate over the years, so that's something to check at some point.
