Storing food in garage.

Post by Jane »

Hi, I am just about to start prepping for the first time. I have always kept a good stock cupboard and other essentials such as matches, large candles, large radio batteries and bottled water. However, as we live in a modern house build 1970’s the only good storage I have is my garage which is integral to the house. I have a cupboard which I store tins and dried food. I have read where a garage is not a suitable storage option, but I have no other choice. It is always cool and dry and garage door is sealed against mice. Anyone else do the same? I have never had a problem with food perishing!

Indeed, welcome to the forum. I stored tins of food & packets of dry pasta, rice, pulses etc in plastic boxes with lids in a garden shed for years, still edible after several winters/summers. Make sure stuff doesn't get damp & vermin can get to it and you'll be fine.

Hi, and welcome. I've a 1970s house with attached flat roof garage. We shelved between the garage rafters and use that for some storage, but found it got very hot in summer. Normal shelves and cubpoards in there are perfect for tins.

Hi Jane, and welcome to the forum.

Garages can be prone to extremes of humidity and temperature, although attached garages are better as a rule. If your garage faces North, there will be less in the way of temperature extremes. Plastic lidded buckets are mouse-proof, but not rat-proof. Mice can get through very small spaces or holes, maybe 8mm or less.

On the other hand, maybe I'm being a bit fussy. I'll rethink the possibility of food storage in my garage. You may have taught me something!!!
