Bees

Post by Adjee »

Today I gave one of empty hive deeps a make over, sanded it down and applied a fresh lick of paint. I then coated the inside with a swarm lure, placed a mix of wired frames and foundation frames inside and sat it away from our hive line on a floor stand. Fingers crossed it may attract a passing swarm, a bit of an experiment but worth a shot.

Never heard of a swarm lure! I hope its successful - I know local beekeepers try to rehome them during swarm season. Good luck.

Best of luck. We need to look after our bees. I only learned about a year ago, that bumble bees are different to honey bees. I think a lot of what I thought were wasps were honey bees. And a lot of people kill anything that looks like a wasp, if they can.

I regularly get seed packets of Scottish wildflowers and randomly chuck them about.

East Lothian council have also dedicated various roundabouts and verges with wildflowers to encourage the bees, plus they don’t have to cut them and they look decent.

I might go get a packet of seeds on the way home!

I've been watching bee keeping videos in youtube lately. Half tempted to try keeping them.

I have a patch of ground where the raised bed was. Think I'll try growing wild flowers on that bit, and along the edge where the honeysuckle grew before the 'gardener' killed it.

Well worth the effort and they are fascinating to live with. The honey is gorgeous and pure unlike much of the fake stuff sold in supermarkets today and the beeswax has multiple uses.

Ive kept bees on and off for a number of years. The latest ones died over Christmas, found them frozen outside the hive under some snow.😥 Been busy cleaning out one if my hives ready to start again! 😄
