There's also home assistant that you can use instead to make it more "local"
I've had a quick look at home assistant. A lot of people use a Raspberry Pi. My main problem is, although I can build PC's and install operating systems, I cannot write code and have no experience of networks. If this is complex, it may be too late in life for me to tackle the learning curve.

Is the home assistant completely independent of the Internet, wifi and a "normal" router?
You can tbf get pre configured units these days. I haven't yet used HA though I believe you need some level of knowledge

I'm a network engineer in my day job, but I looked at Homey pro, mostly because I figured I want something to "just work" - It didn't "just work" I figure I don't want yet more "stuff" to work with at home

There are many alternatives to HA too. With HA, you can make things completely independent of the Internet, and it's typically using zigbee though if zigbee is unsupported then there's WiFi too but you can do that locally too

What do you mean by a normal router btw? - The one that the Internet provider has?

I've got Home Assistant running here. It's not independent of the internet. Mine is connected by ethernet (everything in my home that is fixed is).
Mine runs on a Lenovo which sits behind the TV but I started off using a Pi 4.
I have several smart plugs (Tapo) which turn on/off lights, Shelley power monitors that tell me when the washing machine/tumbler/dishwasher is finished. I have Tapo cameras that automatically arm at sunset or when we both go out. There are temperature/humidity sensors monitoring the temperature in the house, workshop and greenhouse.
I'm adding bits to it all the time.
You don't need to be a coder as such, as a lot of it can be set up within the graphical interface. There's a lot of help on Facebook and Reddit groups too.
If you've got spare hardware knocking about give it a go.

Yes, a "normal" router to me is that the Internet provider supplies. I understand that more secure alternative units can be purchased, but I don't want to go there.

I think it could be too complicated to be worth the effort for my usage, particularly if the system isn't independent of the Internet.

Thanks for advice received.
