Powder makes a really, really bad mess, go for water or if you don't have RCDs (why not?), CO2.
As big as you can afford and only two, one by the front door and one by the back door. They should be sited so they are always, whatever the situation, between your exit and the fire so if the fire is too big you can still escape. You don't want to have to pass a fire to get an extinguisher only to find you can't now get out as the escape route is blocked, Defiantly don't put any upstairs. Also forget the garage, you won't be there when the fire is small. If you are playing with flammables (tilley repair, syphoning petrol, reloading) in the garage move one of the two to by your elbow temporarily and don't forget to return it afterwards.
Only one at each exit as, if you don't knock down a fire with one decent extinguisher, another won't help and will just waste your escape time.
Plenty of smoke alarms, mains if possible and in any case linked so one sensing triggers the rest.
If the alarms go off get everyone out AT ONCE, worry about fighting the fire later.
Before you even think about fire extinguishers have an escape plan and practice it.
Call your local fire safety office (telephone directory) and ask their advice it is free and they are always very happy to help.

Very helpful - I looked on youtube and saw the mess the powders leave behind!
Just ordered an ABF foam extinguisher and fire blanket for the kitchen, and two C02 units for the lounge and upstairs exit points.
Fire/carbon monoxide alarms already in place. Along with full plan for household.
Hope it is all never needed.

That looks like good stuff.
Add a bring forward to your diary to check weigh everything in a year. As a tip to avoid the tare-ing and calculating next year weigh them all now and mark on them their actual all up starting weight with a marking pen. It will save time and bother next time.
Fingers crossed that they all rot from old age and nonuse.
