I'd call that a lot of prepping, well done you. I love foraging, and it's also very impressive that you have your own almond tree. Buckets of the nuts!grenfell wrote: ↑Sun Oct 19, 2025 8:22 am Not quite sure it's prepping but our kitchen currently smells of green tomato chutney. We had an abundance of small toms on the outside plants so decided to make them into chutney. Picked a bag of chestnuts from the trees nearby , the owners don't both and they either get driven over or swept up and chucked in the bin. Another bucket of almonds from our own tree.. The sunflowers did well so I roasted some of the heads , another source of fats and protein . They're ok but nothing special. Also tried soaking smashed up conkers in water to extract the soapy elements and that works to a reasonable degree. Oh and more wood brought home to cut up.
What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12

Ordered a snake type draught excluder for my bedroom door. I thought it stuck to the door, but it doesn't. So I'm not convinced. Ordered one of those brush type ones that screws to the door. I'll screw it to the bedroom side, so it's not going onto the carpet plate on the landing. Ordered some more of the V strip for the rest of the door. It thought I had previously, but it wasn't acutally a V strip, just looked similar but didn't stay folded.
Got a good idea of my 'always on' electricity when house was empty for 2 days. It was only 1.4 kWh per day. But obviously it will be more when I'm here, due to the fridge being opened, and freezer drawers, so I'll allow 2.0 per day. I reckon my computer, tv, lamp, amp etc use about the same, or a bit less. Gives me an idea, so I can see how much I'm using when the electric radiator's on. There's a limit, where if I go over it, I might as well turn the central heating on or up.

Had a read of my things to do list. I have some pot plants to put in the ground, and others to go in bigger pots, but I can't do that until my burned hand has healed, which is gonna be at least 2 weeks. I can barely have a shower, so doing as little as possible. Got a good idea of things to do, anyway. Need to order hand sanitizer wipes, as the ones I have expired in September. Got to re-charge most of my batteries this month. I texted the tree surgeon about the ivy, but he's not got back to me yet. I hope he does, because the others I contacted weren't very interested.

Have you been told the tip about wrapping your hand in a plastic bag sealed with tape or an elastic band to keep the water off while showering?
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
I had a shower. I used a disposable glove, and tried to keep that hand out of the water. I'll try adding an elastic band to my next one. Washing my right armpit with my right hand is tricky! The rest wasn't too bad. The red area is reducing in size.

Had both chimneys swept today and replaced one of the CO alarms which was almost out of date. Bought a new torch from Amazon after seeing it pop up and reading the reviews. Quite impressed with it and so was husband although I didnt not mention being influenced by the torch buyers on here - no names mentioned of course

Her fell, how do you roast your sunflower heads? I’ve seen videos on YouTube but always viewed them with a big pinch of salt as I’ve not heard of it from a reliable source.

Fitted a draught excluder to the bottom of my bedroom door. Thought I could just drive the screws straight in, but two stripped, so had to order some more. I have bought two quality Phillips size 0 screwdrivers that might have been better, but couldn't find either. I need one to open the battery compartment of my wind up radio. God knows where they are, I need to make a note. So I've ordered another one. Sod's law, one will turn up as soon as this one arrives.

I've seen a few videos myself , I tend to follow a youtuber called Emmymade and she smeared some tomato and oil on hers before roasting but I just put the in the oven without anything.I baked the heads whole after first brushing off the petals and then baked for around 15 minutes on a medium heat. Frankly it was a make it up as I go thing. I'm thinking of a bit more preperation with others and then dry frying in a pan. It's not something I'd done before.Mad Scientist wrote: ↑Thu Oct 23, 2025 1:22 pm Her fell, how do you roast your sunflower heads?
