Can you get a water filter for inside a tap? That sounds mad but we're sick of the water in this flat turning everything black. The shower head, the taps, and sink plugholes are all black gunge. Is there any way of filtering from the taps so we don't need to buy gallons of expensive water? No mains water, it's all held in a tank up in the roof space.

I have flow pure filter attached to the tap ..you take the bit of the fitted tap and screw on the filter really simple to do
Can switch between normal tap water and filtered
Theres a few on the market so depending on size and where your tap is situated you'll find one to suit
There is a difference too and the filter lasts a good while

I wouldnt ask the HA Andy, it's my water not theirs - if I find a filter that fits my tap then it's going on - husband's got a pal who is a gasfitter and plumber.

We took our 2 hole sink and fitted a mixer tap onto one and a filter tap onto the other. Council haven't complained yet.....

Last year I took the plunge and got a reverse osmosis stainless water filter and whilst its not connected to the tap i must say we have got quite used to it and as far as I can tell the water seems purer, the filters only need changing once per year too which is handy.

Not cheap mind but worth the peace of mind.

Lil maybe you should be thinking about the cause of the problem. Is the tank contaminated,has it been left open? Not sure if you’re in private accommodation or rent but I think you should get it checked out as it doesn’t sound healthy.

It's a HA block of flats winterprep - for over 55s, high amenity/high rent. They have people coming round testing showerheads for Legionnaires etc and testing the temp of the water, so it can't be anything harmful. Its just horrible. I googled it "black slime on showerheads & taps" - and seemingly it's not the water, it's airborne - so we've started running the extractor fans inside the showerroom and the kitchen a lot more. But I still don't like the idea of a watertank up in the roofspace For now we've just bought a load of 5l bottled water and working on an easier way to use it. Probly a big jug in the fridge door, refilled daily - but a lot of work for the poor hubby

Yeah, I ran the phrase through GPT and it advised more ventilation. It reckons it's probably a biofilm, a slimy mix of bacteria and fungi that naturally occurs in damp environments. Clean with mild bleach or Milton and rinse.
