Another vote for Mora.
I have loads of knives but only about a dozen are fixed blades. For the price Mora can't be beaten (buy two in case you lose one and you'll have change out of a score). I bought mrs K one for the garden and she used the bejeesus out of it and left it outside over the winter; a bit of rust cleaned off, oiled it and it was ready for another season of abuse.

As for carrying in public, if you're sensible (unlike the allotmenteer in Manchester) ,only carry when you have a good reason and don't have it on view you'll be fine.

Well, this didn't quite go as expected.

Opinel No2 carbon for my pocket. (lovely dinky little thing..)
Opinel No9 carbon for general stuff.
