Straw Poll. How much food do you have in reserve?
Re: Straw Poll. How much food do you have in reserve?
3 months, probably a little more. There are only two of us at home plus the cat who although he is currently an indoor cat might be sent out to find his own food, the only thing he has ever caught is a frog and the occasional spider and woodlouse. Husband would likely perish from lack of sweets and chocolate, although I would be able to bake him sweet treats. We would likely have to feed Dad, so portions would be much smaller and probably have visit from some or all of the adult children. One of them does have some food preps though. Two of us would be fine, 3 also but more of a push. There is no way that my stores would last more than a month if I had to feed everyone.
Growing old disgracefully!

The first month would be fairly normal - although milk would be an issue as we adjusted to dried milk and I think we would run short of fruit & veg fairly fast. The back garden at has some forage, even in winter that would help with that a little. After that we would be on oatmeal gruel, beans and rice & have enough of that for another couple of months. We don't really have room for more.
When covid hit we regularly went 3 weeks between main shops but milk was always the sticking point that needed excursions to a local shop.

I only have three months dried goods right now (for four people) but my plan is to get to 1 year of at least moderate protein and carbs storage. I have an allotment for fresh stuff, but I can only grow so much, and I'm not the best gardener! Dried rice and beans form staples, then there's a big box of noodles (we work through that every few months and replace) large stores of stock cubes (solid soup!) and chilli and preserved garlic are also vital for flavour.
