Your preference really. Seeds are cheaper whole (unshelled), but more work if you want to then eat them shelled. I buy shelled so I can just grab a handful and eat, and whole for longer term storage, because they keep for years and years.

I have bought from Vivapure in the past

Theres these too

I bought 0.5kg today at my realfoods store and will try it out. If it does what it says on the tin then I will be ordering 25kg.

excellent info thanks! I don't know why I haven't given hemp any thought it in the past but I'm glad you've brought it up - and the links!

Are there any known problems with it? I invested in a load of sprouting seeds only to have a national ban declared the following day! so I'd like to know in advance this time

Can you explain? What ban?
I'n not a lawyer, and I can't give legal advice
but it is my understanding that because the hemp is related to cannabis it is illegal to germinate the seed, but legal to own, touch, crush, grind, eat, just don't throw any water on it or tptb might throw you in jail.
Farmers in the UK may grow hemp, but I think they must have a licence from the Home Office

Sorry - I wasn't clear - not awake yet. I was thinking more of any dodgy side effects/allergies/contaminants type thing. There isn't a ban on sprouting seeds - I exaggerated a bit. But just after I bought loads of the stuff and was merrily sprouting alfalfa/mungs/etc there was the thing about people being hospitalised with ..umm....maybe salmonella (mainly in Germany I think). God I'm doing what I've been moaning about now and not backing stuff up but you'll probably remember? about 2/3 months back they were advising that people don't eat sprouted seeds unless they were cooked through (which kind of defeated the point for me). The other suggestion was to wash your newly grown seeds with hydrogen peroxide before eating.....
Anyway, sorry for being flippant - hopefully after I've bought a ton of hemp they won't suddenly announce it's contaminated with ...whatever... :)

Never even knew it was regarded as a foodstuff.I have fished with it for...35yrs?And when you boil it ,it Smells AWFUL.It catches fish alright-and I guess that's how I'll use it.

Interesting topic though .I guess the ready made food is palatable ?

hemp is legal to grow in the uk because of eu ruling. go to the sensi seeds website they have a hemp kit on there, comes complete with an eu licence making it all legal and enough hemp seed to last you a life time. it is an important and valuable resourse and every one should have some hempseeds along with other fruit and veg seeds stashed away. it has the highest levels of those essential omega oils they harp on about. is an amazing versatile food stuff. the plant is one of the most important to mankind. you can also make clothes, building materials and medicine and lots of other things from it .

It seems that some may not know the connection.. Hemp is another name for a cannabis plant. This is why its cultivation is illegal and requires a special licence. The female plants are the drug producing plants while the male ones are used for producing fibres. Drug growers don't want any male plants while if you get a license to grow your plants will be checked to ensue they are all male. I understand its a very involved process getting a licence and I expect its not cheap! I don't know what the process is for getting workable seed as surely you need both sexes...

If your buying hydroponics equipment and hemp seed you can probably expect a visit from the local constabulary as it will be assumed you're growing drugs ;)

Certainly sounds like a good storage food though I'm a little dubious if the milk! Wouldn't it make your tea taste funny? :D
