Re: Make SHTF lighting in just 7 minutes !!
Hi Nick,
Nice vids. It good see someone actually doing something in a realtime situation unlike all the "Here's one I made earlier" ones that almost look shop bought because they spent 3 days making and perfecting it.
Does the water from a dehumidifeir need distilling? I would have thought just boiling should be OK as there can't be too many impurities in it but I am happy to be proved wrong.
Nice to see you are doing well with the solar power. Just thought I would point out that the sun will become a red giant in about 4 billion years and then fall back into a white dwarf which will not be sufficient to drive your solar panels so maybe you should start prepping for that now.
Keep up the good work and I shall be looking out for your new vids. By the way, I have the same dehydrater as you but have not used it to it's full potential. I got it for making Beef Jerky, have you tried that? If so I would love to hear about it or even see a vid.
Be lucky (and supercilious)

Yea, people do a lot of speculative driven stuff, but I was thinking that what if there is some real stuff happening in the world and what if I need stuff to do stuff?
Maybe this is why I am a non political low level prepper rather then a survivalist
Water from a dehumidifier ranks as "grey water". Same as the stuff that you have just had a bath in (YUCK) or that delicious source of water that is the stuff that you have just done the washing up in (YUCK!!). it is apparently riddled with all the stuff that you have been breathing out, farting out, sweating out etc and on top of that it may have metals from the electrical stuff in the device. So, dust, heavy metals, spores, mold, fungus, viruses, bacteria...... Boil it if you want, but I'd rather take purification tablets to it and then distill it !!
LOL, I am sure that the chemistry of my body will have gone around the natural cycles many times by the time the sun goes out..
I haven't made any meats in my dehydrator, just dried fruits, vegetables and home made biscuits. The biscuits are the best. Mash up some fruit and nut mixes int he blender with water, lay on oiled grease-proof paper in the dehydrator and when its done you get the best fruit and nut biscuits in the Universe !!

Gotta try those biccy's. Sound scrummy.
Let me know if you decide to do the Beef Jerky, I love it but it aint too cheap. I read that skirt if the best meat to use but I was wondering if you could make bacon jerky? I love bacon and that comes in an ideal thickness.
Thanks for putting me right on the water. If you are distilling it, do you still need the purifying tablets?

I got to do experiments with the water and get it tested by a lab before i go around telling people to drink toxic water.
As far as bacon jerky, I thought that bacon (or pork, chicken, fish or shellfish) was meat that it was really unwise to do any amateur storage with?
Just be safe and don't get a terminal gastric condition in a SHTF situation

A couple done in the oven, most attempted outdoors over an open fire.

Hi Pseudonym, How did it come out?
What cut of meat did you use? How thick/thin was it? Which of the recipes did you use?
Thanks a million
Hi Nick, Thanks for that. I will have to look into it. I saw somewhere they they are now doing Turkey Jerkey so I never thought that some meat might not be suitable for preserving

I am drooling all over my keyboard. Even the sausages look nice.
Do you store it or would I be right in guessing that that gets eaten pretty quick?

You can store it, as long as it's dried out completely. The Oven method is fine over night with just the pilot light going and the door cracked open an inch.
As for in the outdoors I would say it depends on what time of year/ weather conditions/ heat/smoke of fire used etc.... longest I have left it was 36 hours and still a bit moist in the centre... but it was all ate before the drying process could be completed
