SUCKING EGGS

Enjoying this but wishing it had more real facts and less statistics and figures in it. Truly an eye-opener how they got things done in wartime... Like Lord Woolton picking up the phone to call a South African millionaire friend of a friend and asking for money to finance mobile canteen convoys for the heavy rescue squads - the answer was "Yes, whatever you need its there".
How the Tories were opposed to rationing and thought it would help the economy if it was left a free market... until it was pointed out this was the case in WW1 and resulted in munitions workers staying off work because they had no shoes to wear to get there in.
Very interesting and leaves me wishing I knew more about wartime Britian.

Sounds a lot like where we got our part socialised part free market mindset from. A different cultural history to America and therefore a different view on society.

I have the same book Lil, found it a great read as it all tied in with stories my grandparents would tell me, especially my granny.
Being honest, I often find myself wishing our governments had more a mindset of the wartime one than they have now. Back then, despite the deprivation and hard times, there was a genuine community spirit that just isn't the case now. I have a real doom n gloom feeling that when the crunch comes we'll be told "Sorry guys, every man for himself" and left to get on with it as best we can.

Actually, pretty similar to what's happening now......
