Check out this site, I think it supports the idea of free mapping of the UK. Find a location, print screen to a pleasing scale or download to a GPX file for use with GPS.

It's limited because it will only print what's on screen, rather than the whole map, but not bad for a small area and slightly bigger than the OS site map.
