Re: Brow Farm Feedback ?
We got one of those hand mills, very good bit of kit and they delivered quickly.
But you will certainly know about it after grinding away for a couple of pounds (Lbs) of wheat.
They do the grain as well, but it is probably going to be easier to find a local farmer and ask him for a bit during harvest time.

Re: Brow Farm Feedback ?
I bought one of those hand mills about a year ago from Lakeland in a sale for £15. I have been looking for a little grain since then just to see how it worked, sort of 'proof of concept', certainly don't expect to use it often but it has proved difficult to find some. We were in Paris last week and by chance found 500gm bags of hard wheat in a supermarket (together with a lot of other desirables).
So this thread has spurred me to grind that small bag. The mill worked perfectly, fairly fine flour, rougher than shop bought, but completely acceptable, easy to set-up, use and clean but hard work, certainly raised my heart rate. I now know why public mills were successful, I would hate to do that daily.
It took 20 minutes to grind 500gms and the burr got up to 55ºC (infra-red thermometer) so I doubt if it could be mechanised cost effectively except on a small scale.
I am very happy with the purchase, the build quality is good but I would not expect it to last if it were used much except on a 'hobbyist' basis. The burrs are not replaceable and they are, of course, the vulnerable parts. If you are planning on using such a mill to provide all your flour I would go up a grade or two.

Re: Brow Farm Feedback ?
"borrowed" this from a friend
I knew I would get fed up turning the handle on my grain mill. Well it took about a month or so but I decided last week to motorise it!
Really easy for anyone who owns a lathe. I took off the handle and turned a plastic dowel to fit over the end where the handle would attach. This is then held tight using a machine screw (M5 i think) a hole for which was already tapped into the end of the grain mill handle attachement.
Makes enough for a loaf now in about 1 minute
Pete.
