Re: How much food do you store
Am I the only baaad wee person here who's in stitches at the mental pic of a group of big men in khaki shorts sitting round a camp fire talking very seriously purely in acronyms?

Re: How much food do you store
Well I'm back in one piece
Most of the stuff is in one place now and what I currently have is:
tins
26kg of baked beans + various other beans
5.2kg of sweetcorn
8.8kg of garden peas
12kg of soups
1.2kg of carrots
5.9kg of tomatoes
6.4kg of rice pudding
6.8kg of various fruits
3.7kg of marmalade
jars
23kg of pickles and various salads
2.8kg of olives
5.3kg of various sauces
1.3kg of honey
bags
6kg of sugar
6kg of salt
20kg of rice
4kg of various spices
other
25 litres of mineral water
120 loo rolls
So in total there's over 140 kg of food but there's very little water and very little grains (only rice) so I will work on that. But as soon as the mylar bags and buckets are here they will be filled with grains. And there's only myself + my partner + 2 cats

Re: How much food do you store
well done Technik, a good feeling to get it done. You deserve a cuppa!!
Re: How much food do you store
Thanks Su. Yes, it's a good feeling to have it all sorted and now I know exactly what I'm missing and what I use the most.
But there's no time for a cuppa - the van needs to be washed, a couple things need to go in the loft and have to sort out some paperwork for the self assesmnet as today is the last day HELP!

Re: How much food do you store
This is one of the reasons I am trying to get it together to have a canner + mason jars and to learn pickling and possibly to (in time!) get or make a bigger better dehydrator.preppingsu wrote:If I had a cow I would (I hate goats with a vengence - pets of the devil!!)the-gnole wrote:You'll need to learn butter making then Su.
Are you going to do dry curing and other methods of preserving rather than relying on freezing?
My goal next year is to look at other ways of perserving - not just meats, but veg/fruit too. I know I am too reliant on the 3 freezers we have!!!!

Re: How much food do you store
Don't forget other older methods of preserving...salting, curing, storing in fats...that used to be commonplace but fell out of favour due to our modern desire for healthier methods. Should have added preserving in sugar to that too.
