Tinned margarine - approved foods

Post by smileyt »

Hi guys

I've just done an approved foods order (they are selling nairns oatcakes cheap and I've bought enough of those to more than cover the postage lol the delivery man is going to be cursing me!)
Anyway, they are also selling 'Rosa Margarine' in a tin, 5 tins for £1. It might be worth checking out and seeing if there is other stuff you want. I also bought a load of stock cubes.

I probably won't be able to eat the margarine as it's not likely to be vegan, but I will stash it away as it should last for years. In a dire emergency (TEOTWAWKI) I could probably force myself, or it would be a barter item.

Another site which is selling the same tinned marg is Rosspa. I've never used them so I can't comment on their service, but someone on here might find that info useful.

Happy stashing!

So why not can some butter?

Simply done, and not too expensive to have a try.

Hi The Gnole,

Any tips to the virgin canner?

I have always fancied storing butter long term - but can only find ghee in my local wholesaler.

Cheers

It's the American term for bottling, Ian.

I just found this! My friend has canned butter, I think someone here does it too. There's also.......CHEESE! :D

If you want tinned butter you can import proper stuff from New Zealand.

If you want to "Bottle" or "Can" your own then you need to buy your butter and kilner jars and read some of the posts on Bushcraft UK

BcUK Link or take a risk and look at canning butter link

So why not use the UK term then?

Putting butter into bottles is easy but the quality of the butter after is like ghee. Awful.

Sterilise the jars, pour in liquid hot butter, seal, shake often as the butter cools until it is set.

Not really bottling and as it is not cooked and pasteurised has a high failure rate.

I have tried using sterilised bottles and, under aseptic conditions, pressing in slightly warmed butter until full, then sealing. OK so far but I will report again in a couple of years as to how successful and the failure rate.

I saw canned cheese in aldi the other day.

The point of buying it from approved foods is that it's only £1 for five tins. I wouldn't be able to do that myself at such a low price, and I'm not wasting money on buying butter if it's going to spoil. I don't mind spending a quid and no effort, though, especially as it was an add-on to an order I'm already doing.

Agreed, Smiley. I'll have to have a look for the tinned cheese, that's one thing I'd miss. I eat a lot of cheese! :)

But eventually those tins will run out, so now is the best time to learn how to make cheese. All stores are is a stop gap between supplies ending and starting again, but they don't last forever.

Knowledge is better.
