For me now,its all about sustainability. I have as much"stuff" stored as I can handle or even want,I have never been into "Boys toys",Food too. The stored food is ever-rotating and is kept at the level we are comfy with.
Its my garden. I have a very large spread,which has been cultivated for the last 20 odd yrs. I am gradually developing perennial edibles to cover 2/3 of the area. This will mean that with no effort there will be crops every year. Such as;
Fruit trees, nut trees, fruit bushes,Jerusalem artichokes, many herbs(many with medicinal use),Welsh onion,Oca,Amaranth and Quinoa,,and many others. Also developing bean production for dry storage.
I find it a fascinating subject, and lovely to look at too.

The trouble with prepping is that(I think)you can easily become overwhelmed by the idea that you have to store so much stuff-and that can be tough the way money is going. My Permaculture project aims to bring a sustainable angle to the food and fuel supply(I am also planting willow for biomass-simple and crops quickly).
All in all for me it gives me a very calm feeling towards lifes turmoil knowing what I am creating will pretty much outlive me.

Well, I think it's all too easy to get caught up in competitive prepping. There's always one kid at school who has the biggest penknife/make-up collection/dad. What use is that ?
It's not about having gadgets, its about having the mindset to survive, I think. About not being rigid in thinking. About planning and foresight. We shouldn't get caught up in buying stuff. Because stuff is just stuff eh  And the more you have - the more you have to lose. KISS works best every time.

My Dad was a Naval man. He always worked on the KISS principle. If ever us lads were facing a problem he would just say"adapt".
As I have mentioned before,Spring may find me out of work(Im hanging in for redundancy pay-Ive earned it)The pantry full of grub WILL help, but if I dont adapt and get my head round that ptential life changing event,I'll be no use to my family or my self. Adapt. Its a powerful word.
Good reality check there Lil.

It basically boils down to fact that we are all doing the best we can with the resources we have available. And doing something - anything - is better than doing nothing, right?!?

PS: my dad's bigger than your dad...

It is.

A lot of people out there talk the talk, but don't walk the walk, it's no good talking about it without actually doing the physical side as well, there is a need to have "stuff" you can't make an omelette without having the eggs to start with, or a suit without material, needle and thread.

My preps this weekend was getting the old chap to look for his old catapault for me, he made it from Ash wood back in 1942, so has seen plenty of action in the past, just hope I can get myself up to the level he was.

Also got £200 from selling a couple of my rifles, so my new one only cost £95 instead of the £295. So now have a CO2 rifle to go with the PCP.

Also received my CD of rifle targets and a strip down instruction for the PCP rifle apart from other useful info on the disc.

Other preps were "Paying it forward" by helping a friend with some furniture, now when I need some help in the future he will return the favour.

It is a good way to buy time without spending money, has anyone else been "paying it forward"?

I am sorry about this Moderator.

Gnole you keep spouting this "talk the talk-walk the walk".
It REALLY sounds like you are trying to goad/criticise/p@ss people off.
I know there are others here who feel as I do. I could say more but it is becoming irritating.

Just put me on ignore if you don't like my comments jansman, and I'll reciprocate.

Apparently I have said this "twice"

itsybitsy wrote:OK folks - we need to tighten this site up, and pronto. Scoobie has already said that he is fed up of reading nonsensical, unsubstantiated rubbish on the site, and I know the majority of the rest of us are too. So we need to start doing something about it or UKP will be no more.

I, for one, don't want this site to go anywhere, and I know you guys don't either. So it's up to us to start getting involved, reporting posts or shutting down the idiot posters who are trying to derail our threads.

We've recently lost Carrot Cruncher, Brambling, and now Ian has taken leave - hopefully he will be back in a few days, but to be honest, right now I wouldn't blame him if he didn't bother. All a great loss to the site, I'm sure you will agree.

This is OUR site and it's up to us to keep it free from ranting idiots who haven't got a clue what they are on about, conspiracy theorists, trolls, flamers and feckwits. Sorry if that offends anyone, but the time has passed for pussy footing around the issue.

Scoob - I hope you don't think I'm speaking out of turn here, but I am also fed up to the back teeth with nutters. And it's also posted in the 'Suggestions' section, in case anybody misses it here.
At the time I thought this was inspirational.

I managed to lug my freecycle bookcase out of the car and into the house single handedly (almost giving myself a minor hernia in the process) and get it set up in the understairs cupboard. Only thing that's missing is the wooden bits that hold the shelves in place (dowels/dowling)??? Anyone know where I can get some from?
