I think that the only problem with us trying to encourage everyone to take on these new skills is that although some people will take part, there will always be those that decided not to. Now that could mean that in a worst-case scenario they either die or become a dangerous threat to other people. The other problem is that by one trying to convert them to the cause you may become more vulnerable as those that you've approached will know that you’re prepared. I think that people have to understand the situation and want to take part themselves rather than being told to. Although that doesn't rule out some prodding and careful spin.
In terms of using horse in the future I think that the only problem with large horse to plough fields etc... (I.E. Shire Horses) there isn't many left in the UK (Correct me if I am wrong) so it will be up to us to effectively start almost from scratch in selectively breeding the strongest and largest horse that we can find so that in a few generations they would have them available....Unless they've managed to crack something more efficient in the meantime
So what will you do if the oil runs out?
Re: So what will you do if the oil runs out?
Ah, but everything we do doesn't have to be long term, no point in sticking food in a bucket and leaving it there for 40 years, but a rolling stock is far more logical, expensive end and unavailable in the future stuff is worth longer term storage. Stuff like were rare or difficult to get during the early forties and fifties is worth thinking about.
If you want a future with "pepper" then store it, if this country goes to pot in a big way, then pepper is not something we grow here succesfully, if you like rice, and you want to keep eating it then store it, but you won't get many years worth unless you have a big store.
Bottling/canning as a method of food preservation is all well and good for year to year storage, but where are you going to store 20 years worth of 1ltr jars.
A) Living in some level of comfort when things go wrong (TEOTWAIKI)
Q) How likely is it to happen
A) High at the moment
Q) when is it likely to happen and what makes you think that it will happen then?
A) It could happen tomorrow by tea time, Because it could, nothing in life is guaranteed.
Q) what if you are wrong?
A) Good, Some people will think my preparations are pointless, and they can be right a hundred times, But if I am right just once it will have been worth it.
Q) if it doesn't happen, will your "preps" be useful for some other eventuality and if so what?
A) Of course they will, If there is a power outage I can still use my preps for that, if there is snow and the roads are closed meaning no deliveries to the shops I can still have food on the table for several weeks at least.

I think the two parts I have highlighted go hand in hand, more people on here know I prep than do in the street I live in, they know I have camping kit and that's about it, they don't know I have cross-bows, compound bows, rifles, pistols and huge selection of sharps, multiple gas bottles, large genny and fuel etc etc.
But they do like the free beans and eggs we "Buy it forward" with.
I talk to the neighbours on a regular basis, but it is more along the giving advise on what is going on in the world and what do we reckong we should do as a street community? As you say "Prodding and gentle spin"

In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
