Lordy! That's a very odd combination! My fave is beans on granary toast, with grated cheese and brown sauce. I could live off that!

Try spreading the toast with pesto before topping with pilchards or mackerel in tomato sauce then sprinkle with grated cheese and brown under the grill.

If you grow basil in the summer, pesto is not that expensive to make.

Yum Yum.

Omnomnom! Must try that!

My mackerel toast goes: Toast one side of bread. Spread other side with marmite and break up mackerel onto it. Stick under grill. Pour tomato sauce from tin into pan with a little olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and chilli and extra tomato puree if desired and cook till bubbling. Toast + mackerel on plate. Sauce over the top. Nom!

See? Told you I was weird!

serious point:

If things do go pear shaped we may all need to learn to be unfussy about what we eat. There is a phenomenon called, I think, appetite fatigue where people will literally starve rather than eat what is available. Survival is often as much about attitude as skills

It was in the papers the other day that the cheapest meal ever was one Mrs Beeton put in her book.
The sandwich – a slice of toast between two pieces of buttered bread, with salt and pepper – has 330 calories, 9.5g of protein, 12g of fat, 55g of carbohydrate and vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and D
What a wonderful woman she was :D

Exactly. My mackerel toast thing is a case in point. I made it up when I was first living alone many years ago and incredibly poor. I had almost no cooking skills past boiling pasta and making toast. For some reason I became convinced that tinned fish would have the most nutritional value, so bought a tin of what I thought I'd like (I was sold by the tomato sauce!) and combined it with what I had been living on for a bit (marmite on toast) and random stuff from the cupboard. Luckily I quite liked it!

I would need to become unfussy about offal, baked beans and sprouts. But for the time being I'm storing what I eat (and eating what I store) so hopefully it wouldn't come to that for a while! As I'm sure it won't come to anyone else being forced to eat Mackerel on Toast a la Mouse!

I had to look up air popped popcorn! Popcorn is fairly low in calories too if you don't use butter to cook it with. However it comes, popcorn is GOOD!
