A soldier, burglars, and a plastic (?) front door

Post by Carrot Cruncher »

Although the story has it's comic element, have a look at the link to see the photo of the damage done to what looks like the chaps plastic front door, though from a second look it maybe wood....not sure. This was done while the occupants were inside sleeping, no effort made to be quiet.

A naked soldier stopped a robber from stealing his car in Salford by smashing the window with his bare hands.

L/Cpl Wayne O'Mahoney, 41, from Charlestown, chased after three masked men who broke into his house early on Saturday morning.

One of the robbers, who was armed with a knife, tried to drive off in his Seat Leon sports car but ran off after L/Cpl O'Mahoney punched through the glass.
It shows how easy these doors can be kicked through, and is an area that definitely needs some attention before things go belly up, not after.

Yeah, these kinda doors are paper made - you need really heavy steel doors to stop anyone kicking them in. If you've ever watched any of the documentaries about cops raiding houses you probably saw that the big gangs always have huge and heavy steel doors and it takes the copers a good couple minutes to go through them with that thing that they use.
Btw - it must have really hurt punching the car window

How weird. They must've thought he was away and she was in the house on her own. If I lived in a place like that I'd get a steel door or something, would be worth it.

That front door is a wooden one, probably "solid" wood from Wickes mind, where the panels have come out it shows that it is the weak spot on the doors construction, probably less than 5mm thick in places on the panels.

Any house/property is easy enough to get into if you really want to, a door, a window is just a way of letting people/air/light in and out without leaving a gaping hole in the wall, some windows probably have four or six 100mm screws holding them in with some mastic covering the joint between the wall and the frame, glass is easy enough to break, and rear doors tend to have less security than front doors.

If the car door window was slightly open it will break easier than if it is shut completely.

UPVC windows and doors just need that black trim slashed and then they just push out.

Go for a old solid wooden door with hinge bolts OR a expensive steel door made to look like wood or upvc.

But this only hinders theives and the police. In a SHTF scenerio your home isnt safe at all

The black trim usually can't be accessed from the outside on most modern upvc doors, however the panel can easily be kicked out, whether the rubber can be seen from the outside or not. There are only clips holding it in place from the inside so a couple of strong kicks will see the centre panel just pop out.

The most common solution is a PAS24 composite door. They look like wood but they are composite materials, stronger than wood as they flex a little bit. You can improve the security of these further by having them fitted with steel mesh internally. If there are surrounding windows you need to ensure they are laminated. A replacement composite door can usually be fitted for about £600 each with the more secure options.
The proper security steel doors are either expensive or they don't look very 'homely'.

Standard euro locks are not secure though and many composite doors will just fit standard cheap euro locks. Better to replace them with more secure options - see another post of mine relating to locks and doors.

I think one of these might get through almost any door, in little time, just wakes the neighbours a bit.
