Even if it doesn't purify the water, will make it taste better! :)

Well, there's the rub CC. I live in the middle of nowhere, don't drive and there's no public transport. Realistically, I would have great trouble outrunning any imminent threat. Given warning I would walk 3 miles to the next village and bus it from there. The upside is, I'm not in a flood area, I'm enough off the beaten track to be safe for a while from most other things and I can manage well enough where I am. I do have a hidey-hole nearby, but that is my last resort. The only other option is to *ahem* 'run to the hills'

BDE, you actually said why bother prepping if I was going to use a hotel. :D

Thanks, but if the S has hit the F in a big way I'll probably need something a little stronger...

If it was a choice between one of four abandoned cottages or an Hotel I would go for the Hotel every-time, mind you, if it got "that" bad there are plenty of very nice "Country House Hotels" that are not that far away, in the country they tend to have either oil or LPG Heating with Generator back-ups, some well stocked kitchens and dining rooms, plenty of linen, plenty of rooms, a well stocked bar, or two ;) huge gardens for growing, long access drives with good visibility.

If it was Apocalyptic, then there will be some major resources available to anyone who has managed to survive the event that caused the Fourth Horseman to come hurtling through, the ability to "Prep" for the Apocalypse is really a pipe-dream, after all the actual odds on being one of the survivors is possibly less than being the lottery winner.

the-gnole wrote:My "bug out" plan is not for apocalyptic events, a "Bug out" should, IMO, be no more than three days, maybe a week at a push, and I would head for the nearest Premier inn or Travel lodge out of the affected/effected area. So in the UK that would be about a mile over the bridge.

A bag with some clothes in and some cash would deal with that.

Having been within a couple of hundred yards of two major industrial unit fires it was a case of a stay at the parents place for a few hours, then to friends for a couple of hours then home again in the evening.

Wer might think about an emergency box for the out of town lock-up garage, but that's about all that is needed.

Is this a serious answer? I was thinking about this today and it seems ridiculous beyond comprehension?

Do you seriously think you could just ring up and book a travel lodge after even a basic event like a Reactor fire or similar?

It’s hard enough to book a room normally, in times of trouble it would be impossible.

I fear ill be passing your crumpled body by the roadside mr Gnole.

PS to all those mentioning Rannoch Moor... its a dead zone there. BUT there is Rannoch Forest which is very very viable.

I also live in the "real" world, I don't live near a reactor, so no worry there, Last one to have a big problem in the UK was over 50 years, and that is over 200 miles from me and a similar incident that "might" affect me in a way that i would need to bug out is absurdly unrealistic.

The last major incident in my home town was 18 years ago, I was not stopped from going to my home to shut the windows, but stayed away afterwards for another 3 or 4 hours, So again nothing serious really happened that would have me bugging out in fear of my life.

If need be I could be in an hotel within an hour of a significant enough incident that would require me to nessesitate me to pick up by bag and get out of dodge.

That is the "reality" of anything happening big enough to have me legging it.

YMMV

The question I asked was what peoples plans were if they intended to Bug Out.....it wasn't asked so we could slag each others plans off. Everybody here has different opinions on the threats we face and so plan accordingly.

If you dont agree with someones plans, thats fine....lets debate it, but it doesn't mean that they are wrong and you are right

For just a tiny split second I thought we could have a proper rational debate about the merits of the different options like proper grown ups.... ;)
