Thanks for the info on the ex batts, i didn't think they would have much egg production left in them, there you go then, if i decide to get some chucks in the spring it will be ex batts, a much better standard of living for the girls, and eggs for me, might be a good option for you also dibley.

I have kept chickens for many years. We keep layers and others for meat. Personally I would not want to stack them in hutches. Fence of an area, maybe 4 or 5 metres square if lack of space is a problem for you. They love to scratch around and peck , it is still fun to watch for me after all thesee years. Put in 4 or 5 chickens in.

Thank you everyone I did not expect so much about chickens. :o It seems the more self sustainable we attempt to be the greater the skill level required. I admire our seniors who did this without thinking. :geek:

Again thank you I have the winter to prep for there arrival.

merry Christmas all.

Bought that off the bay for £46, i'm in the same position, small back yard, 20ft by 15ft approx, would love to keep 2 chucks, but dunno if the size of my yard would give the chucks a full crack at life, could take on 2 ex battery hens, yeah it would be paradise for them, but they would not have much egg laying left in them by the time you get them, pretty much no egg laying left at all, thats why they are either despatched or moved on by the cruel inhumans that farm battery hens.
whats the quality of that like
how long will it last ?

im no expert but
consider bantams as well ,
not as great layer as ex battery but ideal for back yards,
also i seen on a country forum with the egg layers they look a decent size but everything goes into providing a egg a day so when their end has come there is hardly any flesh on them .
