Community as preperations?

This may have been covered in the past, but I thought it would be interesting to get peoples take on how they bond with their local community. it is a "prep" in its own right as they can be your greatest allies in a disaster and people you can help and can then receive help from in exchange.

There is more than one reason (as a "prepper") to be a part of, for example, a church community.

Knowing your community and being on freindly terms is a must for all. regardless of what you're prepping for.

Your best friends could easily be your next door neighbour, but more importantly in a real SHTF scenario they are more likely to be your worst enemy. It's a lot harder for some one to do you harm if they view you as a friend.

I've thought of various scenarios and how the people on my street might act. I've discovered this year that there are more gardeners than I realised, but there are also many with quite shallow and consumeristic lifestyles.

Selling eggs has helped me meet a few people on the street. I now know at least a little bit about a number of people (50+ houses) and have thought about their skill sets!

Church (chapel) for me is another important community. I'm the only prepper I know of (well besides Mr R&T) but I know we'd all help each other out as much as possible. I wish I could approach more of them in some way.

have been living here for over 2 years now and i wouldn't trust anyone here in a SHTF situation not these days, maybe when i was a kid things were different more community spirit, but most people/sheeple these days only look out for number one.

In a tiny village like mine, only a couple doz houses, we would close ranks to outsiders, whether we like each other or not. So a lot depends on where you are I think Nick.

Would that not depend on what skills that person brings??

I live on a private new estate, still in the process of building more homes, expensive detached a lot of them. Mine is classed as an affordable home, much cheaper and not detached. I am glad of this because of high fuel costs. The people who are here are young couples that both work to pay the mortgage, how they manage i don't know? all have cars some two. An american airbase nearby and lots of the military rent on this estate. So i estimate we have about 2ooo, adults and we are surrounded by farm land. I have my doubts about these people pulling together in hard times simply because they are young and haven't experienced real poverty like lots of us older ones. I grew up in fifties Middlesbrough, back to back houses, tin bath, little food or clothes, open fire, coal picked up at the side of railway line, the drivers used to throw it out for us. If they could come together it would be an ideal place to try and survive some occurrence but, we always have buts and until one undergoes situations one never knows.

yeah, thats right, i live on the edge of a small town on a housing estate, about 500 people on the estate, another 500 in the town and about 300 in the rest of the parish, oh their all friendly enough but i wouldnt (really) trust any of them, i think when the chips are down it would be a very different thing.
