This is for ethanol, alcohol not biodieselthe-gnole wrote:Is this to use with your bio-diesel?
Some instructions for how to make alcohol gel for an alcohol gel fire are here
http://benjimester.hubpages.com/hub/Gel-Fuel
Alcohol gel fires are quite a big thing for the monied, but the fuel is costly that's why people seem to be developing an interest in home made alcohol gels.
I have seen almost identical recipes that use different types of alcohol and apparently nearly any type of high strength alcohol will do it, but I have to confess I haven't tried it yet, but if it does work then that means that indoor heating problems plus (one expects) cooking problems are sorted out for good.
Yes I have spoken to the HMRC and distilling alcohol as a heating fuel (not a machine or engine fuel, but a heating fuel, up to 2,500 Litres a year for your own use alone and not for resale) is allowed so long as you keep records, but you don't need to register with HMRC or get a license to do distilling for this purpose.
All the fireplaces are are just good looking ways to display the burning gel cans. Thats all.
There are some that don't use gel but use liquid alcohol and have a separate tank, but i haven't worked out how they operate yet. it is possible that they just work on a wicked system, but I want to research that more.

Are you planning to distil your own for this? From some of the reading I have done, the bog standard or home made stills won't make a pure enough form. Even with a good setup, you may struggle to hit a70-80% alcohol and the gel stuff I read up on needs to be above 90 to burn well enough. I did see there are some £500 units that can give you a 93% alcohol but that's a big up front investment
Really interested to see how you are looking at this though, I am looking around trying to find a way to get off gas as prices are only going to keep rising. Having the solar is one bit but better ways to heat and cook are definitely on the medium term list for me too.
