Hi and welcome from an Okie who has lived in England for almost 22 years now.

I hope you enjoy your time here and we will enjoy hearing your perspective on things.

To answer your question, I'm not aware of anything like what we have in the US. The British Red Cross has begun a "Ready for Winter" campaign after a hard winter last year when many people were caught out. It's a great start, encouraging useful things in cars and stuff including food and water at home, but I wish they would be a little more in the public eye and also would encourage more than the bare minimum common sense items. Guess it's not common sense anymore, though.

Sorry for my rambling.

@Carrot Cruncher & itsybitsy Thanks for your kind welcome. I do hope to contribute from time to time, but for my purposes I hope to learn from the perspectives presented.

I concur that some of the material available on the internet varies from reasonably informative to highly speculative. Some of it unfortunately also tends to run toward the “tin hat” side of the spectrum. That’s why I like the previously mentioned FEMA site and another called “ready.gov” they’re basic in their approach (be informed, make a plan, build a kit, get involved), but also, and more importantly they encourage a rational and balanced approach to prepping for the hazards commonly encountered in one's area. They’re worth a look.

@Rosesandtea Hello. You settled in the UK about the time I was last there. I’m going to have to go back and see what’s changed! I get to Europe every 2 or 3 years but the Continent its nothing like the affinity I feel when I visit the UK.

I think you’ll find some things have changed since you were last in the US regarding emergency management. Most of those changes have been driven by two events: 9/11 (of course) and the Hurricane Katrina response. But those topics are discussions for another time.

And you’re right I think, common sense no longer seems to be very common. Didn’t find you to be rambling at all.
