Imagen economic collapse has hit the UK and the world currency no longer has value people are fighting over the last can of baked beans you had supplies for 3 weeks you have just ran out what do you do..... Some of you will grab your Bug Out Bag and go to the woods or wonder the streets looking for food But ask yourself this how long do you think you Can last.
the shear number of people to land mass dus not bode well for a survivor / survivalist in my opinion it is not feasible or practical to stay in the UK your best bet is to try and get to Europe wear their is lots of woodland and large areas with low population you have a better chance of surviving
What Do You THINK ?
economic collapse // SHTF
economic collapse // SHTF

Re: economic collapse // SHTF
It seems to me that an economic SHTF situation will be non localized and that Europe will be melting down as well (or worse). I suspect the local populace will quickly fill any niches in the countryside. Going to Europe might just make you another refugee who doesn't speak the language and who is not elligible for any of the assistance a citizen might get. I note that the UK government is currently making contingency plans for an emergency evacuation of British citizens in living Spain if the economy melts down there.
There are no good solutions really (as you say population levels are very dense here) but one thing that might be done now to help in such an event is to plant an edible garden. I do this. For example, all plants in my garden are edible in one way or another - even the bushes are things like currants and gooseberrys. Other items are a raspberry border, a few fruit trees are espalliered on the edges, beans run up the fence panels on netting, parsely is set in the borders of the beds and there is a large patch of chamomile which acts as ground cover. I plant tomatos in pots and things like rhubarb in the sunny areas. I find rhubarb to be a very attractive plant and it is very nutritious and is also the first thing up in the spring.
The idea is that an edible garden is cheap insurance. If you have to leave no problem - just go, but if you have to stay you might as well improve your odds. At least you'll have some fresh fruit, berrys and veg to supplement whatever else you can find.
If you want to see what can be done in a small plot have a look at what this guy is up to.

the UK and the world and a garden is a good idea but good luck stoping people from tacking it once some one knows you are growing food they will brake into your home looking for more supplies and then what

Hi George
There have been a few threads recently discussing the merits of bugging in and bugging out, i think it very much depends on your own circumstances as to what is best for you.
As to leaving the UK and heading to europe, i'm not sure. It would have to be a last resort for me unless I knew the people in the area I was going to very well (family maybe), I could speak the language, had a place to go to etc. and even then you would probably still be seen as an outsider. History shows that "outsiders" dont generally fare too well when things go to pot.

Re: economic collapse // SHTF
You actually have to ask why these areas have low population density. Is it because they cannot support intense population? is it because they are farmland? mountains? It does not matter if you have 1000 acres to yourself if it is 1000 acres of swamp.
Where are you goijng to move to? Portugal? Poland? Do you speak the language? are they going to let you move in? ... Loads of questions to answer

Yes you are better off in a low population area then a high one but the whole point of prepping is not to become dependant on the state or charity to keep you alive...rule 1 - dont become a refugee!

Re: economic collapse // SHTF
maybe i didn't right my post as well as i cud have i was talking about a long term thing people dying form starvation no government people stealing from overs and killing for food all over the UK / Europe i meant go to Europe because it has more wild / big open places and you can hide and be self sufficient with out having people come up on you
Re: economic collapse // SHTF
I believe in this situation we will rapidly have an empty country.maybe i didn't right my post as well as i cud have i was talking about a long term thing people dying form starvation no government people stealing from overs
there will be a 25% to 40% drop in population within the first three months as medical supplies are suddenly cut, There are thousands of elderly supported in there own homes by carers who would be suddenly be abandoned.
Then the disease from the dead think millions of corpses left in homes, water contamination and cholera is next for the uneducated and unwary. accidents fighting and starvation will also play there part.
this country will rapidly become empty so providing we can survive the first 6months and the first winter then it might be about long term survival and a new type of existence. so in this case I would not move to Europe.
Re: economic collapse // SHTF
I agree with dibly and i would have stashed some of my beans in different locations preferably within walking distance or a short cycle ride away. Adaption to the situation that unfolds and having different plans and a number of different locations to run to if shtf is my premise. Three weeks supply of food is really not enough in my opinion and clean water is very important.
Re: economic collapse // SHTF
someone else did a piece about a govt study of the 70s/80s which said once SHTF and the "die off" started, within 6 months the UK population would be cut in half-about 30million, within 12 months it would be down to 15 million, 18 months 7.5 million, so i suppose after 2 years it would be down to about 3-4 million, thats a hell of a reduction and would give the survivors plenty of land to make use of.
