Allotment

Post by Rayman »

Ive been on the allotment waiting list for some time now.

The council recently mentioned half size allotments on their website, I went to the council to show my interest in a half sized one, anyway, they directed me to the allotment secretarys house, will be giving him a knock this week, fingers crossed, will let you know what he says.

my missus put her name down but its like a 20 year wait an any full size plots are getting reduced into halfs or even quarters,

but she has a friend whos going to america in 4 weeks to live for part of the year and their garden has a chicken house and a veg garden they only ever put spuds in.

shes going to see them this week,
my main concern is if i plant it up they sell the house or when they come back to stay.

maybe an exchange of fresh veg and keeping eye on their house in exchange for land rent. ;)

If you can find a private allotment area it is sometimes possible to just go and have a chat with the members in the club house, yes, some of these have club-houses.

Also if really desperate try a gardenshare with the local old folks who have gardens they can't manage.

You can always nag the council and see if there are enough other people on the waiting list to justify them opening another area for allotmentiers.

Power of the press and all that.

In 2010 i had a allotment on a farmers land an 6 months after i joined he shut it down as the water meter bill was too much,
even though he let the pipework extension leak for weeks and several people use sprinklers several hours aday.

sorry rayman for thread hijack hope you get one quickly.
do you have much room at home?

Before i moved my house backed on to allotments and i was told there was a long waiting list. The allotment at the end of my garden had been unused for ages so i took photos and reenquired and not long after that it was mine :) It seems that although you may be told there is a long waiting list (and this may be true) , some of the people on the list have there mind set on certain plots and others will have moved away or just not need one anymore.

So go and have a good look around for unused plots that are not being looked after, the council will issue a letter to the owner and if nothing is done its taken off them. And just keep on at them there are ways to the top of the list 8-)

i think most associations have a rule that you have to work the plot and not allow weeds to develope so they cant spread to neighbouring plots,
there has been cases of plots being taken back and reallocated due to being untidy.
