Do you really think there will be a Soup Kitchen mentality on the streets?
People WANT and people TAKE. It’s like 6 months from the riots isn’t this fresh in your memory?
When there is a power cut of a few hours statistically crime and burglaries GO UP.
People won’t be knocking on your door asking to borrow a candle.. there’s filth in our society and we now have third world and eastern bloc society living amongst us as well. Its only fear of the law that keeps many in line, take away that fear and see the real society.

Do you believe that defense of yourself or your community would be a requirement if you were the survivor of a global disaster? If so what would you put in place?
For example you might believe in moving to an isolated location, perhaps even an island or a ship anchored well off-shore, and minimising your exposure so that conflict was unlikely or you might decide to select what you consider to be the location (rural or urban) with the best resources and prepare to defend them against any competitors. What's your approach and how far would you go?
I would do whatever I needed to keep my family safe. In terms of the defence I believe the strength lies in prepping. Know who will be bugging in or out with you. either way have a plan for home defence (who will do what / who is the best shot etc) and the same for bugging out. evasion has to be the preference so have a route and a practiced order and signals for the group.
In terms of islands I agree that they may well the eventual target for large numbers and will have to turn people away, however the best prepared in when to leave and where they are going should have the advantage of arriving earlier.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
You are absolutly right about the islands ... they will be a prime BOL but you will need to get there realy early to catch them with their guard down..... when foot and mouth hit england in 2001, it was only two days before the islands saw groups of "concerned citizens" at the docks making sure that there were no livestock or dirty boots and cars coming onto the islands.
I would think that anything serious enough to get the majority of the populace moving would see a quicker response.
hot tip .... learn to talk like someone from Stornoway or Lerwick
to answer the Op ... I would see that in such a situation as societal collapse you would no longer have the luxery of relying on plod to turn up when you phone? 999 (if there are phones) so you would have to rely on yourself and your family or community.
So a defense in some manner would probably be necessary, however just because there is no reliable police dosnt mean there will be no justice. town hall, or the strongest landowner will soon be back in charge as there is a great momentum to respond to authority. So I wouldnt think that land mines and "shoot first, go through their pockets for answers" attitude will be accepted either. So some sort of rules of engagement would need to be set out. (warning signs on the minefield perhaps?)
I also dont think it will be rabid biker gangs that will be the greatest threat to the preppers either...its more likely to be a citizens commitee or local church/ mp / policeman who turns up at the door wanting most of what you have. Whether it be for their own benefit or for the folks who turned up at the empty soup kitchen when their three days worth of food ran out and the stuff in the freezer went rotten!
TEOTWAWKI is likely to be a slow slide into mundanity with short peroids of excitement as the new local order is established.
I've thought about this issue for quite some time, and really there is no definitive answer, yes I'd defend my home, I have a rifle (fully legal) but would I shot some hungry 10 year old stealing fruit from my garden, No so what goods the rifle?
Yes, as I said I'd defend whats mine but, I think in reality the only real protection is obscurity, that is being invisible! a well stocked garden will be raided, if seen! solution, well I moved up to the Highlands where land and house prices were cheap, no longer!
For me, I just could not envisage any form of "defense" while living in a town situation, up here I can have a reasonable sized garden, with livestock! not be seen from the road, not perfect but a long walk for a hungry person.
As for my rifle, good for the pot, only 4 miles from the shoreline so sea fishing, cycle there and back in under 15 minutes
I remember as a kid I got a combat and survival (or words to that effect) catalogue and it was selling shotgun landmines and gate mines. I could not believe it. Then, found another magazine that showed you how to make them with just 4 everyday household items and a shotgun shell.
So simple, so bloody effective. Worst comes to the worst ill dot a few around the garden, just in case...
