I remember as a kid I got a combat and survival (or words to that effect) catalogue and it was selling shotgun landmines and gate mines. I could not believe it. Then, found another magazine that showed you how to make them with just 4 everyday household items and a shotgun shell.

So simple, so bloody effective. Worst comes to the worst ill dot a few around the garden, just in case...

Skippy I liked your thoughts on this I have tried to think this one through and come to the conclusion it could go several ways with no reliable predictor for any one conclusion. It could be like the riots of London or it could be community's coming together like the foot and mouth crises or when we had the major snow.
I think now is the time to Prepare but where we each live means our location and the proceeding events will in some way play a part in the local response.

Coming back to the Original question and how to prepare I have looked at the home and think we hopefully will just blend in and we will stand with our neighbors those that dont BUG out.

I do wonder about the Garrison not more then 15 miles away there are lots of very trained young men in units with weapons and what would it take for even a platoon to take a town with the guns and comms they could hold or take what they wanted

I've thought about this issue for quite some time, and really there is no definitive answer, yes I'd defend my home, I have a rifle (fully legal) but would I shot some hungry 10 year old stealing fruit from my garden, No so what goods the rifle?

Yes, as I said I'd defend whats mine but, I think in reality the only real protection is obscurity, that is being invisible! a well stocked garden will be raided, if seen! solution, well I moved up to the Highlands where land and house prices were cheap, no longer!
For me, I just could not envisage any form of "defense" while living in a town situation, up here I can have a reasonable sized garden, with livestock! not be seen from the road, not perfect but a long walk for a hungry person.
As for my rifle, good for the pot, only 4 miles from the shoreline so sea fishing, cycle there and back in under 15 minutes

I am a competitive cyclist ,at that rate you do 32 miles per hour. As a licensed rider , I reckon at 19 miles per hour average as good..

No, not at all. In fact, as a Military policeman, I can quite honestly say that German law is not too different from UK law. My point is this...

slimslim: I imagine it's a no-no giving too much away here but Ive been Army for 10 years, which includes the past two years in an Army Training Regiment as an instructor (however, not Sandhurst). If I can offer ANY advice, please do not hesitate to ask.

So in your 10 years and at the ATR, you have only ever seen personnel that would drop kit and run if the SHTF then?

I think its pointless arguing about this - history tells that a certain percentage would desert and go home to make sure their families were ok, and a certain percentage would stay and do what they were told.
Personally I wouldn't like to be anywhere near a garrison town if things went to hell. For a lot of reasons.
