Re: Non-electric lighting ?
That said I found lamp oil didn't burn as well and the wick went down sharpish. Ymmv

Trim the wick before use and turn it as low as possible and it won't smell.
Re: Non-electric lighting ?
I'm not sure it was the "burning of" that caused the smell, just the general smell of paraffin. Which is best done outdoors.diamond lil wrote:Trim the wick before use and turn it as low as possible and it won't smell.

Well we are using it in powercuts and don't notice the smell, unless the wick needs trimmed. Either way it's your choice, try them both and choose one!

That's what I keep mine in, I have three metal 20ltr cans full, but, you could keep it in some plastic 25ltr kegs, but I have seen those degrade if not stored out of sunlight, but needs extra care when pouring.moocher wrote:i just been to local feed store and they have a batch of parafin lamps in at £4.99 each

You just brush the hard burnt bits off the wick after every use, you will see them.

if you don't then that's when it smells. And turn the flame up as much as you can without it smoking. If too low it will go out or be too dim, if too high then it will smoke and smell.
