what do preppers think their chances of long term survival are relevant to the more serious scenarios of shtf such as economic breakdown when clean water and food are scarce, law and order gone.

if someone wants to survive after TSHTF then they will, cos they will do whatever is neccessary to survive, i know i will.

Middling without a big die-off, with a big die-off there are other obstacles to deal with before long term.

I have to say I think me and my mini will do ok. I think I'm pretty tough mentally, I'm very adaptable and I have skills that many people dont have, I can fish, I know how to set traps and snares and I know how to dispatch small animals...I'd have trouble with a cow but rabbits, chickens etc no worries. I know how to mend a lot of things and I have lived on a very meagre diet a few times in my lifetime. I'm lucky enough now to have a job that gives me a bit of spare cash to spend on stores and equipment and so long as the S doesnt HTF tomorow then I envisage being able to build up a good stash. I live on theoutskirts of town, 30 seconds away from woodlands and fields and I have escape route from our home planned - though I think we will be able to bug in ok. We also have stonkingly good immune systems and rarely get ill. The only major issue I have is that I am female with a daughter - but I am looking at some kind of self defence class in the near future - like I said as long as the 'event' is later rather than sooner. I'd give us a good 70%+ chance of surviving a majore event. :)

The problem has always historically been:

1. Too many people to compete with for resources
2. Not enough people to assist with bringing together resources

Getting a mix of both really relies on luck as well as planning, you cant buy the former unfortunately.

As one of my Instructors said "Sometimes you can do everything right and it will still all go wrong", accepting that and coping with it are beyond some people.

I really like this quote:

"On a long enough timeline. The survival rate for everyone drops to zero". Chuck Palahniuk

You accept that you do the best you can, given the circumstances you are in. Not giving up is why I am here.

On a day to day basis I wont be inconvienced, up to a week not an issue.

I give myself slightly better than average chances than most of Joe Public if it lasts longer, I don't pretend to myself for a moment that Survival after that will be like a post apocalyptic version of the Good Life (ooh Felicity Kendall  ) though.

Surviving the "event" is usually the easy bit, it does of course depend on what the "event" is/was/might be.

A year down the line of a "MAJOR EVENT" is going to be a very messy place.

In a similar response to another thread I have to have a strong belief in my abilities to survive long term because I really dont fancy the alternative :|

Not doubting your abilities to survive Alleycat, also not going to deny others abilities to press the delete button on anyone they feel they want to remove.

Almost anyone can survive in thousands of different scenarios providing they have the control and the knowledge to do so, but when you add in other factors which you don't control that's when it might be problematic.

What are peoples thoughts on predator groups that are operating in the UK with their prime objective to eliminate those who have quite happily done all the hard work for them?

In an TEOTWAWKI situation up to Nuclear war but not including it as we have no radiological protection I give our immediate chances of survival at 90% at 3 months
We have enough stored food for 3 months and Im not going to say about the other stuff but generally we are in good shape.
However in the long term, 12 months + We lack survivability due to the limited food reserves.
We are confident at defending ourselves against up to 6 attackers however serious armed opposition would overrun us and force us to capitulate or run (if we could)
So how does that compare........ I think we are in poor shape overall if its an end of the world senario however in a lesser crisis i give us a good shot at survival

You are probably not too far off Skippy, but that is one of the advantages of living further north, less population will have its benefits.

The biggest hurdle is the initial cause, then the aftermath.

Only after surviving those two items, which could last several years, do you get to look at your long term prospects, up to then you are probably looking on luck more than judgement.
