OK, three asks so I'll try to put the little sheet I did on the forum.
I'm no technical writer but I think you'll get the drift!


The wood feeder tube (horizontal bit) is not welded on, just cut out tabs and cut two slots into the chimney. The infill was gravel. Some purists use vermiculite, too complicated for me and the gravel makes for a solid base.
Current pot stand is two strips of metal 1" wide screwed in the middle and bent into a )( shape.
This is a copy of rocket stove basics from the web that should help a bit more.


Can't show you it all finished as my camera is broke and on my birthday wish list.
MUCH better instructional s on utube though.

Tools, Stanley knife and tin snips. (Plasters for when you cut your fingers).

out of interest presumably if you were using this out in the field you'd use soil/sand to fill the space between the chimney and outer tin?

Yep but the dryer the better because when it's drying out it generates 'smelly' earthy smelling steam.
I've also used gravel and dry sand.
I did try fiberglass insulation but the whole thing was so light it toppled over and i lost my supper. NEVER AGAIN!

This is a good bit of low tech kit,good shtf gear.Of course you could get a Kelly Kettle.Now they boil water in 4 minutes.

love this rocket stove idea.. what kind of metal tubing is best to us? The burn tube is much thicker than the outer tube so again what kind of material is it and are there any specific sizes... if its made too big does it work less effectivley for instance... Hope these are not dim questions.. id really like to try and build this very soon and make sure we can get it working before the need arises!

what a brilliant idea ... i will be making one of these but will probably cut the top off totally and either weld on a flat steel plate for cooking .. or perhaps just put a grill on the top of it ...

Hi , if you are going to the extent of making this then take a look at Wood Gasifiers . A 5 gallon paint tin with a sealed lid and £10 worth of 22mm copper pipe and a compression tank fitting is all that is required .Fill the tin with dry wood or leaves or plastic bags etc and light a fire under it .20 mins latter you will have wood gas coming out of the end of the pipe that you can run a generator with or pipe the gas inside to run a stove or fire ( with ventilation in the room of course ) .Then after the first burn you have 5 gallons of quality charcoal to use to heat the next lot of wood etc in the gasifier . SO creating a recycling system of wood to charcoal to heat .

As an alternative to having to burn anything , A Methane gas generator is easy to build and if you add a bottom feed and mid point drain , all your waste including Human can be placed in the gas generator giving an endless supply of free gas that can be used for heating or running a petrol engined car or generator when petrol isnt available .Take a look at the Indian videos available on youtube under the heading of Methane Gas Generator . A simple 2 barrel model will cost around £30 to make and when running will give you a gas supply for 6 to 8 weeks .So setting a second one off at the 5 weeks mark after setting the first one off will give an everlasting supply . Methane gas can be stored in old inner tubes or balloons etc without too much danger , The wood gas becomes volatile when stored .So Methane is best for using in a vehicle ( As during WW2 ) .
