No Blade of Grass

Post by Tocsin »

No Blade of Grass; written in 1956 by John Christopher.
There may have been posts about this book before, it would have been very futuristic in its day. All types of grass have stopped growing and food is getting very scarce. A family living in London get the word from an insider "We have to get out of London... NOW!" First by car then on foot they try to reach their BOL in the Lake District but as TSHTF they encounter all sorts of opposition and problems on the way....rioting, motorbike gangs, ambush, rogue army units and so on.
A film of the book was made in 1970 with a very haunting theme song. I managed to get hold of a copy a couple of years ago and whilst it is a bit dated, it's still very thought provoking.
The book is sometimes available on e-bay (also known as 'The Death of Grass') but usually isn't cheap as sellers seem to know that it's popular in the Prepper community.
The film used to be viewable on You Tube but there's only extracts that I can see at the moment. Again I've seen the DVD on e-bay...but not cheap.
Hope this may be of use...

I watched it a couple of years ago, I will never get that time back  , it was a sad excuse for a film, all they seem to do was walk, get attacked, walk some more, get attacked again, walk some more, reach their location, get shot and die

I guess another critical eye tells another story ;)

What a wonderful book. I just finished it for the third time in as many years. Pirrie is the perfect anti hero!
I've not watched the film as I fear it will ruin my perception.

Today 'wrinkle in the skin' arrived, ready for my holiday in 2 weeks. Fingers crossed :?:

Certainly a case that the book is better than the film. John Christopher himself thought this too.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Robert Frost.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

I love that book! So much science fiction is shiny, doesn't deal with the nitty gritty of life, but this one is great. I'll re-read and come back.
