self heating meals

Nearly finished my 72hr BOB just food left to pack
has anyone tried those self heating meals and does anyone have any recomendations also best place to get them from.

I think I saw a discussion on these about a year back, from what I recall they weren't very well rated especially for the cost Vs quantity.

There are better alternatives.

Hopefully the above will take you to it. I bought some and I think they are great, a bit pricey but great nevertheless. Splendid for a morale boost when sitting in a freezing, foggy, field in the middle of nowhere for 6 hours plus!!!!

If you buy a full case of hotpacks (24) they work out at £4.35 a meal + postage. I've tried the veggie options. They both did the trick out in the open on cold days.

Much better value IMO are the Vestey day ration packs which includes 2 main meals. For £8.71 + postage you get (this is just one menu as an example):

I would say they will, but need to be re-shaped to get them in the bag, basically just squish them into a narrower shape to slide into the bag.

I have tried a few of the "hot cans". They worked but were very heavy (the actual food was about 1/2 the total weight) and expensive for what you got. I wouldn't carry them in a ergan (going to have small stove in there for other food), but I do have a couple in the back of my car incase I get stuck in snow / etc.

This allows a lot of flexibility as to menu and as we use the pouches at home there is no danger of them hanging around until they are tasteless.
